Large tracts of orchards burned to ashes after a huge fire broke out in northern Sudan on Friday.
Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a listener reported that the fire started on Dafi island in the area of Sukout, between Dongola and Wadi Halfa in the Northern State.
“Owing to the strong wind, the flames soon spread to the neighbouring islands, and destroyed thousands of palms and fruit trees,” he said. “The losses amount to millions of Sudanese Pounds.”
The source criticised the authorities for not intervening. “They did not lift a finger. The orchard owners and the villagers managed to extinguish the fire in the end.”
