On Sunday, the residents of El Jireif in Khartoum state took to the streetsandnbsp;in protest against the confiscation of their lands.
“Schools and shops in the district were closed,” one of the protesters told Radio Dabanga. “Leaders of the National Consensus Forces [a coalition of leftist opposition parties] participated in the sit-in.”
He said the Khartoum state government has failed to implement the agreement reached with land owners almost a decade ago.
“Our lands have been taken as agreed in 2007, but we have not been compensated since then,” he complained. “We have become tired of false promises and delays.”
In June last year, hundreds of people in El Jireif staged a peaceful demonstration for the same reason. The police used tear gas and fired live bullets to disperse the crowd. Three people were killed. Dozens were detained.andnbsp; <
