On Sunday afternoon, a number of students were wounded at the University of Khartoum when the riot police dispersed hundreds of demonstrators.
The students held a memorial service for their fellow student, Ali Abakar Musa Idris, who was killed by security forces during a protest at the University of Khartoum onandnbsp;11 March 2014.
Many others were injured as well when security and police agents used batons, tear gas, and live bullets to disperse the students who peacefully demonstrated against the widespread attacks against civilians by paramilitaries in Darfur early that year.
Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a Darfuri student reported that police forces “reacted extremely violently” against the memorial ceremony.
“A number of students fainted, and many others had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.”
He could not give exact numbers yet, “owing to the chaos”.
