Commander Malik Agar Regarding the Meeting of the Leadership Council, Sudan Revolutionary Front, between 13th-17th October 2015
Like many others, I have read the press statement issued by Eltom Hajo on behalf of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) in which he announced a decision by the Leadership Council of the SRF transferring the Chairmanship of the Front to Dr, Jibril Ibrahim, alongside a vote of thanks to my person.
This statement is false and bears no connection to the Leadership Council of the SRF and only represents the source from whence it came. And whatever that is it couldn't have come from the Leadership Council that met under my Chairmanship in the period between 13th and 17th October, and before my departure from the French capital after the final session of the meeting, unless Mr. Hajo is referring to another Leadership Council we don't know about. There was no agreement to issue a statement, nor had the differences regarding the selection of a new Chairman for the SRF had been resolved. These matters remained, by consensus, under consideration. The differences centred on the process and the timing of selecting a new Chairman. Several proposals were tabled to resolve this deadlock, but none received agreement by consensus.
I should note that Mr. Hajo had previously issued a statement announcing a decision by the SRF
confirming the admission of Sudanese Forces for Change-GOOT to the membership of the Sudan Call. I undertook to rectify its ramifications. As the constitution and procedures of the SRF specify that decisions are adopted by consensus, especially on a serious matters, such as the selection of a Chairman for the organization. The meeting of the SRF last June took a decision to extend the term of the current Chairman for another year until the current constitution is amended to specify the selection of a Chairman by the majority of votes in an election, instead of by consensus. This has not happened thus far. I have indicated my desire for this to happen so that SRF is able to select its Chairman in a democratic process.
I wish, therefore, to make clear the following:
1. The said statement constitutes a new qualitative development of thrusting into the open disputes within the organizational confines of the SRF. Not least disputes between persons occupying leadership positions within the SRF, which bound to add to the intensity of factionalism and tensions, at a time when we are most in need for unity; after succeeding in encircling and isolating the regime. What happened will widen the extent of differences and may propel it from amongst the leadership to the cadres, membership and supporters of the SRF beyond. This, broadly considered, could only increase the sufferings of our people. We have to avoid these damaging repercussions to the cause of our people who have entrusted the SRF with achieving their dream of equal citizenship, peace and democracy, and the establishment of a broad alliance between the peoples of the marginalized areas, democratic and patriotic forces capable of building a new Sudanese state embracing all its citizens. Therefore, I plead with all to expend all effort to enable the SRF to come out of this more cohesive and avoid getting swept in a tussle, that benefits no one but our opponents.
2. I offer my thanks to our allies in the political forces in Sudan, and our friends in the region and the international community who have spared no effort in working to maintain the unity of the SRF. We look for further increased efforts in this regard.
3. The current political situation in Sudan displays a marked shift in the balance of forces in favour of our people and for the demands for change, peace and democracy as a result of the sacrifices and unity of its political forces and civil society in challenging the regime, We have succeeded in denying it the legitimacy it sought through the widespread boycott of the general election and the rejection of the so-called national dialogue. The Sudanese people, certainly, have an appointment with victory. It falls upon all of us to continue in our quest for the unity the civil political forces; this will in turn contribute to the unity of the SRF. And, we have to maintain the unity of the Sudan Call forces as an novel achievement of our people, and work to widen it and to structure it so we can arrive at a united position for all the opposition forces, not least, as concerns the national constitutional dialogue and the peace process. We have to present a common vision to the African Union High Implementation Panel AU-HIP at the start of the series of meetings scheduled to take place on November 2nd.
I will shortly hold meetings with officials of AU-HIP and the United Nations and other international parties in which I will affirm the prospect of a unified stand of all the opposition forces in the face of regime maneuvers. Particularly, in the light of the SRF ‘s readiness to meet with Sudan Call forces at the nearest opportunity and contacts have also being made with opposition forces beyond the Sudan Call partners.
4. There are now two blocs inside the SRF. We must not resign ourselves to this situation, but we have to work to overcome it and transform this crisis into an opportunity that would enable our people to escalate their resistance to the regime. I will, however, maintain my contacts with all to coordinate positions relating to the cession of hostilities and to a single peace process with two tracks. It is fortunate that the leadership of the SRF had already agreed a full and comprehensive roadmap together with the arrived at in close coordination with the Sudan Call forces about the Preparatory Meeting, so as not allow the regime the opportunity to exclude any Sudan Call parties, or any of the other opposition groups. We have to assume our responsibilities, and deny the regime the chance of catching fish in these troubled waters.
Lastly, I have followed in the social media the involvement of some leaders of the SRF in inflaming antagonisms. And I would like to urge all to distance themselves from friction as that would only lead to deepening the differences, which would definitely only benefits the regime. All will have to direct their energy in a positive direction, in search for solutions that would enhance joint working to help end the suffering of our people and help oust the current regime.
I offer my abundant gratitude and regards to all those who supported the SRF and I remain hopeful for their active contribution in the struggles to come of our people.
Cmdr. Malik Agar
