On Friday, the police in eastern Sudan's El Gedaref detained at least 300 people on charges of inciting violence against the state.
Shareef Adam Ishag, head of the El Gedaref Youth Association told Radio Dabanga that the authorities raided the districts of El Tadamon, EL Geneina and Abaker Jibril on Friday morning and randomly detained “at least 300 residents.
“They accused them of inciting violence against the state by organising demonstrations. When the people protested, the police fired tear gas. This led to the ignition of a home. Some of the inhabitants sustained light injuries.”
Last week, the people of the three El Gedaref districts took to the streets, and demanded the improvement of services during the rainy season. “Recent flash floods damaged many houses, and the water ponds are causing diseases because of the spread of flies and mosquitoes,” Ishag explained.
