Well over hundred souls have died of cholera in rural and urban Port Sudan town of eastern Sudan recently. Lobbyists and activists were quick and effective in putting huge pressure on the anti-people regional government of the red sea state, which is strictly applying the undeclared, yet conscious marginalization and negligence policies of the Sudanese regime directed against the native ethnic groups of eastern Sudan. The regime was taken by total surprise and hit by panic, especially the long-dominant radical elements who seized power in the country after staging a military coup back in 1989, for fear that the rich region they have ruled and exploited its resources(notably gold؟) could escape their grasp . In fact the dilemma of this region and its people dates back to independence (1956) ever since the dominant business-minded sectarian political parties (the ummaanddemocratic unionist party) took the resource-rich region for a cash-cow and vote-pool only. Thus, in 1958 the BEJA CONGRESS was founded, in protest, by a bunch of ethnically-beja intellectuals and some communists sympathetic to their legitimate cause. Today, tension between all post-independence Sudanese governments and the people of eastern Sudan is an old story. But when the –now-ruling – national Islamic front (a Sudanese version of the notorious Egyptian Muslim –brotherhood radical movement) seized power in 1989, marginalization, negligence and oppression became the rule not the exception. In 2005 peaceable civilian demonstrators were given live ammunition in Port Sudan, killing more than 20 innocent souls in broad day light, a massacre for which no body was held accountable to this date. The horrendous crime caused a nation-wide outcry and unmoored region –wide irritation and unrest ,which put the regime under pressure to use every devilish tactic in its quiver to strike a blind-on- accountability agreement with the armed rebels of eastern Sudan in 2010, and that was simply a camouflage because the regime ,in the very day, expelled the international NGOs from the region ,understandably because those NGOs were providing free food, education ,constructing infrastructure facilities, transferring expertise and health services ,for which the need is still dire today by the abandoned native communities of the region . some state and federal posts were allocated to cadres from eastern Sudan after signing the peace agreement ,but none of them was given executive power to bring about major and fundamental change that could improve the harsh living conditions of the region’s inhabitants ,particularly ,in rural areas . today, some intellectuals from the region contemplate a combination of insurgency from below(resumption of armed struggle) and pressure from above(by politicians and communal leaders) to take advantage of the regime’s apparent puzzlement in dealing with the new raging( bull in a china store)of the USA Donald trump , who ,from day one, made no secret of his determination to combat ISIS, ALQAEDA and the Muslim –brotherhood movement . Sadly enough, the unscrupulous governor of the red sea state, who shed no tears on the victims of the cholera in his region, shamelessly declared the cholera –infested red sea state, Cholera -free؟؟؟ Moreover he is still overly busy, allocating every pence to turn port Sudan into a tourism –magnet attracting tourists from the outside world؟ Unfortunately, no person in his proper senses could imagine, how a city which people die of cholera seeks to establish its self as tourism-attracting destination, yet the governor has no other options than pressing a head to achieve his unachievable mission-impossible ,by falsifying the stark irrefutable realities known to tom, dick and harry . Therefore he will never pluck courage to declare the spread of the deadly disease, as this is precisely the goal he was assigned to accomplish. Hence, our priority should be to call his bluff and remove the lid to avail a crystal gaze for those sympathetic and concerned.
