Quote: April 20, 2011 Washington, D.C. Sudan Human Rights Network Militia attacks kill at least 17 people in Sudan’s South Kordfan State
The Sudan Human Rights Network has received credible reports - supported by photos- regarding incidents of violence occurred last week in El-Feid village in the Nuba Mountain, Sudan’s central state of southern Kordofan. The State of southern Kordofan is witnessing a hotly contested election for its governor. The two main candidates for the post are Mr. Abdel Aziz Elhilu of the SPLM and Mr. Ahmed Haroun of the National Congress ruling party and the current governor who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.
The incident that happened on the wake of the gubernatorial and legislative election scheduled May 5th 2011, started when the paramilitary Popular Defense Forces of the National Congress Party attacked a truck carrying supporters of SPLM en route to the town of Rashad to launch the election campaign killing three people. The killing of the civilians ignited the situation and tension flared up that led to clashes between supporters of the two parties. More than 17 people were killed a number of 365 houses in the village were deliberately burnt by the militia.
SHRN condemns the savage attacks of the militia on the people of El- Fied village that led to massive losses of people lives and property as the result of these barbaric attacks. SHRN urges all human rights activists to exercise maximum pressure on the Government of Sudan to disarm and dissolve the paramilitary groups and the Popular Defense Forces (PDF) that mobilized by Government of Sudan and its ruling party the National Congress.
