Swansea becoming a Science city
At the end of an academic year that has seen phenomenal increases in research funding, Swansea University is to recognise the achievements of three of its most successful academics.

Professors Nigel Weatherill, Rhodri Williams and Jaafar Elmirghani will be presented with certificates recognising their outstanding contributions in securing large-scale research awards and thereby supporting the University’s long-term development.

Swansea University is enjoying a period of rapid, research-led growth. In the current academic year (2005/06), the University has attracted in excess of £30 million in new research funding from organisations including Research Councils, Government departments, the Welsh Assembly Government, the European Union, and the numerous commercial and industrial partners whose collaborative work with the University leads to innovative solutions and new products.
This is more than double the value of new research contracts won in 2004/05 and an impressive achievement in the face of fierce national and international competition for research funding.
Over 315 applications for funding have been submitted since August 2005, with many staff winning substantial grants and contracts enabling them to undertake research across the spectrum of the University’s academic activities.
The presentations, which will take place during the University’s graduation ceremonies from 17-21 July, will recognise the work undertaken by the three academics who have had most impact this year:
Professor Jaafar Elmirghani
the University's EU-funded £30 million Institute of Advanced Telecommunications (IAT), a research-led unique collaboration between Swansea University and some of the world's leading multinationals and most entrepreneurial smaller businesses. He is the principle investigator of the projects that IAT is currently working on, including the much publicised TINA, (The Intelligent Airport), which will revolutionise the airport and flight experience.
IAT is currently working on eight major collaborative projects with its high profile partners who include Sony, Ericsson, Agilent Technologies, Motorola, BT, O2, IBM and Boeing. Professor Elmirghani's research has attracted major funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI) and the EU, in excess of £2.5 million over the past year. Professor Elmirghani's projects over the past year include an EPSRC/DTI programme INtegrated STorage Area NeTworks (INSTANT), which focuses on future distributed storage networks for information sharing and exchange.
Hybrid fibre wireless systems for broadband access are being developed in the Intelligent Radio-fibre Telematics Scout (IRIS), in collaboration with Motorola, O2 and Traffic Wales, and Broadband fixed wireless access, in collaboration with BT and Agilent Technologies.
Intelligent wired-wireless networked systems are the subject of EPSRC project TINA, in partnership with Ericsson, Motorola, BAA, Boeing, Red M and Laing O'Rourke. Network protocols and future traffic models are studied in the new EPSRC/DTI Heterogeneous IP Networks (HIPNet) project in collaboration with Ericsson, Freescale and Artesyn.
Another project secured last academic year, VESEL (Village E-Science for Life, EPSRC funded) aims to enable rural communities in Sub-Saharan Africa to use advanced digital technology to improve their agricultural practices based on new sensor networks. IAT is one of 22 EU partners contributing to the COST 291 project Towards Digital Optical Networks, and one of 20 EU partners contributing to project LUCIFER (Lambda User Controlled Infrastructure for European Research), which focuses on the provision of bandwidth on demand in a Pan-European setting.
The Institute has an initial complement of 50 staff (including 6 chairs). It is going through a period of rapid growth and aims to grow to a compliment of 200 staff and researchers in the next three to five years.
Professor Nigel Weatherill, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Head of the School of Engineering, has led the University in securing substantial funding to support a new generation of world-class researchers. The University has been awarded 11 Research Council UK (RCUK) Fellowships, which aim to help young researchers make the transition from short-term, project-based contracts to full-time academic positions. Each Fellowship is worth £125,000 and is subject to the Higher Education Institution guaranteeing a permanent, academic position following the end of the award. The Fellowships were awarded in Mathematics, Geography, Physics, Nanomedicine, Computational Biomedical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Computer Science, and are an accurate reflection of some of the University’s greatest research strengths.
“What these awards mean in practice,” said Professor Weatherill, “is that the University can now offer permanent academic positions to gifted researchers who, in turn, will make a valuable contribution to the University’s future success and growth. The RCUK Fellows will also gain teaching experience and will be able to pass on their knowledge to students who otherwise may not have benefited from their enthusiasm.”
In addition to a number of research grants, Professor Weatherill also negotiated a substantial European Social Fund grant that will enable the University to provide 20 funded places on PhD schemes to help talented researchers study for their doctorates.
Professor Rhodri Williams leads the University’s Complex Fluids Portfolio Partnership, which has been recognised by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as a leading example of best practice in the management of large-scale research activities.
Complex Fluids are so-called because of their composition and flow properties. One example of the Partnership’s current activities is a collaborative project with the NHS to establish a new laboratory for blood clot research at Swansea’s Morriston Hospital. Based in the School of Engineering, Professor Williams is also leading a ground-breaking project to develop a pioneering artificial lung, which has the potential to transform the lives of millions of people around the world. The device, a blood/air mass exchanger, integrates with the body’s respiratory system and is designed to breathe for conscious, mobile patients whose lungs are damaged or diseased. As a portable device, it will allow patients to recover outside Intensive Care Units and therefore offers a better quality of life.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard B Davies said: “Swansea is a hugely ambitious, research-led university. The scale of the increase in research contracts is clear evidence of the rapid progress we are making.”
