Our smiling ‘Queen’ in this terribly sad world
Hats off to you while you are inviting us not only to avoid the ‘abuse’ of the electronic labouring facility of a line that brings together the diverse polities of the Sud-land, but also to walk away from a nonsensical battle and cry. Thumbs up to you while you are at pains urging the people to stop using ‘offensive’ language for the sake of paying respect to real and virtual-real individuals. However, a related word of caution deserves to be highlighted here. I think the last few months have taught us that the management of ‘policing’ the peopling employment of the tool of language is no longer a safe business; it is always fraught with dangers of creating head-to-head conflicts between individuals. Again, though, I completely go a long with you on the premise that the electronic space should not be swamped by stuff that is devoid of any meaningful and didactic content, the same premise still should not be extended to fix the interpretation of what people write. A good exemplification of what I mean is that a couple of months ago we witnessed an online version of ‘language wars’ as a result of the fact that a code of linguistic conduct was enforced by a ‘court of law’ with the aim at fixing how people should produce their opinions and identities in writing. The dilemma with that legacy was not on the production of ideas, but rather on the active interpretation and perception of each other’s identity reflected in their stylistic written presentations. It goes without saying that both activities of writing and reading are governed by hidden driving ideologies. We make meaning of what people write using our cultural, religious, linguistic and ideological convictions. For example, if the word ‘woman’ is mentioned in a discourse of telling one’s story of life – as we have seen in some cases - there is a possibility that this word could be interpreted by some as ‘WO+MAN’ of which the ‘male is the terribly dominating voice in the written sign of the beautiful ‘female’ creature. And such a group of people have become sensitive enough to be too critical of any discourse in which the term ‘woman’ emerges. Of course, their ‘decontextualised’ misguided interpretation of the word ‘woman’ can be accounted for by the physical abuse including ‘mass raption’, miseries, social and political marginalisation of our beautiful life partners in a part of the Sud-land. Despite the fact that history will make no apology for the current seductive treatment of women in the West Sud-land, we should prevent such a horrendous thing from never repeating itself under any guise. However this is no justification for the generalised interpretation which is driven by social and emotional insecurity to portray a ‘man’ as a bunch of evil and manipulative ‘wants’ whenever he uses the word ‘woman’ in his discourse of writing. We should never be guided nor dominated by ‘fear from the known’ because we believe that the evil current known reality is inevitably going to give way to ‘tomorrow’, and tomorrow women and children in peripheral lands are absolutely going to prevail. I’m not saying nor implying that ‘all’ men have or will come to have a utopian opinionation of ‘woman’, rather what I suppose I’m saying is that we should not impose our ideological convictions on other people’s writings and shoulder them a feeling of guilt for something they have never meant nor implied. I know it is a complicated and sensitive issue but the bottom line is that if we are to free from fear the mechanisms through which people write their biographies, present their ‘self’ and make their own history, we are equally required to open the door wide for the realm of interpretation and meaning making grounded on social and historical contexts. Such flexibility and liberal but critical conventionality will definitely do no more harm to our current ugly world simply because we can make sense of our life by walking a way from a nonsensical fight and still smile.
