Re: تماضر شيخ الدين بالإنجليزي: مالها الحقول (Re: Tumadir)

Written by Tamador Gibreel translated from Arabic by Adil Osman
First manuscript, not finished yet, to narrate the story of the green dervish and the wives who wear half perfumes.
All is brimming with life next to the well
All is brimming with life beneath the mountain All is alive A dervish with green spirit and infatuated dress All is brimming with life
Wives perfumed with half the night sandalwood Strolling in the promenade All is living They laugh with the breeze Half smiling With half chastity And half responsibility
Everything is alive Tired husbands sleeping in the shadow of a day half eaten by toil Everything is alive
Children hanging from the pegs of trees like rags Exchanging innocent obscenities and screaming
One of the wives who was wandering in the afternoon with half burden and half perfume, asked the dervish: What is living in this mountain oh dervish? _ the mountain? In the meantime the wife was picking a child from the tree beg Who disappeared running to join his friends as soon as she landed him on the ground
The dervish continued: the mountain? The chest of wind? The fist of earth? The sickle of perpetuity? The heart of land? Oh mountain! Concealing the anger of earthquakes Concealing the joy of fountains And the uproar of falls Are you alive?
The mountain moved a little and nodded his head
The dervish shouted: alive, alive Everything is alive
The women who were half dressed laughed
The birds which were embroidered in the corner of a woman’s sari/tobe sang but didn’t fly away
What’s living in this mute sky oh dervish?
- The sky?
Alive! Hurray hurray! The depth of the blue truth? The bowl of stars? The focus of flying? The retreat of echo? The guard of clouds? Her children are sun and moon? Who sheds sunrise and sunset? Hurray hurray!
The dervish unfolds his hands like a fan for a beautiful Chinese woman He lays the fan like a coloured cloth over her naked blue belly
Hurray hurray! Oh women!
A wife with half henna and a soft sari/tobe where some pale flowers in its midst tried to get ready to go to bed, asked the dervish: What about the sun? Talk to us about the sun oh dervish!
The yellow peach of the sky? The queen of warmth? oh wife with half henna?! Don’t you know that it is a being born out of another being?
The woman/wife with half modern smile, free from worry, pulled the corner of a question :
You, also, say that the sea is alive?
The dervish shouted: “from water we created all living things”
He extended his fingers till they touched the back of the sea The sea? This body wet with the ink of desire and poems and sea routes A body drowned in the sweat of orgasm and the waves’ children Lying beside his wife: the coasts With one eye closed The other eye watching the ports and lighthouses Help! oh sea! Help! What do you say? Oh the women in the neighbourhood! The sea?
The wife ignited/burned with desire While the birds in her sari/tobe were jumping like the kindergarten’s kids
The guillotines were ashamed of the martyr’s dignified body The prisons were exhaling the air of oppression And inhaling the breath of heroes The fields Are living beings The clouds in the sky are living beings The hills and the paths and the journeys are living beings
It was just me who is dead I am dead You are dead
The wife who was getting water in the metal bucket from the well, was perplexed by the fire of the wife with the birds
Did the jinni who visits the dervish come to you? Oh the woman of tree branches?!
The woman with the pale flowers replied: If the dervish’s jinni came to me I would use him for the wash up and ironing
We have nothing to do with poetry. Do we? The wives walked towards the houses carrying their buckets And picked the children from the tree pegs And agreed to finish their half night perfumes in the house of one of them And prepared dinner for their tired husbands.
The woman with the birds continued to murmur with the dervish until the sky lit with a full moon. Everything is living Except us! Everything is living.
