Knowing khalid al-kid, specially during the few years and months preceding his sad death, I believe he would certainly say what MM Kheir is quoting here! But this is also true about many of his generation of communists and ex-communists, who grew so attached emotionally and socially to the SCP it can be such a trauma to leave it behind. Departing from such a complex socio-political body could have enormous effects on those who choose to do so, even when they're quite convinced that it is the best thing to do. It is like breaking away from family, like divorce, something you do because you know it is necessary but your heart is bleeding! If in doubt, just look at what khalid said to his friend: قال لي إن هذه الحزب هو الأب. ونحن الأبناء. يمكن ان نختلف ولكن مغادرة البيت فيها الكثير من (قلة الأدب) هكذا كان تعبيره وهنا سألته وهل انت عائد الآن للبيت؟ قال.. نعم.. وقالها بصرامة وتأكيد
And remembering how our Sudanese emotional make-up is often coloured (specially when it comes to family) with all shades of Guilt-V- Duty, Commitment V Betrayal sorts of emotions, it is not hard to see how Khalid, the very Sudanese Omdurmanite*, could suffer from bouts of similar feelings. (not out of cheekiness, but of pure curiosity and lots of understanding, I would like to ask Adil Abel-Ati whether he recognises such feelings?) I have to admit that I was, and still remain, impressed by Khalid's(and the others’) departure from SCP, as it represented to me a step towards redeeming the progressive movement and the left in Sudan from the power and authority of the Father! The fact that he said he wanted to return to the SCP takes nothing away from his image in my memories, if didn’t make it more human, interesting and beautiful! Khalid, of course, didn’t go back to the SCP despite what he told MM Kheir (and whether he did or not, makes no difference really) and he managed to cope with these almost Odious traumas quite well; he certainly took the most difficult step many of his comrades found so difficult to do: he was ready to take curse of the Father upon his shoulder and walk with it!
May you rest in peace, my friend and brother, always remained a poet, and a beautiful dreamer!
* I like this term, but shall we rather say: Umdumanese?
