Freedom Quest International Summary Report March 27 - April 16
The past reporting period has witnessed the tragic deaths of two very prominent men in Sudan's political and military scene -- Yusuf Kuwa Meki, and Colonel Ibrahim Shams El Din. The contrast between these two men provide a cameo of the struggle for freedom by the democratic opposition forces and the tyranny of the brutal and oppressive Khartoum junta. Yusuf Kuwa Meki, a devout Muslim and school teacher, was governor of the Nuba Mountain region, and a key leader of the SPLA. Under his leadership, the liberated areas of the Nuba Mountains adopted an inter-faith harmony between Muslims, Christians, and other religions which was a paragon of religious tolerance and progressive thinking; and, more importantly, it actually worked. Loved by his people, and respected by his enemies, Yusuf was a man of strong moral character, whose courageous love for his people won him enduring respect from all who knew him. Nor was he a "fair-weather" friend. His loyalty to the liberation movement, despite all its faults and weaknesses, and despite the lack of support he often received from his colleagues, was exemplary. Yusuf Kuwa never gave up hope in the international system which has allowed Khartoum's dictators to commit genocide and continuously deny humanitarian access to his people for more than a decade. Yusuf died writing a letter to the UN Secretary General, urging him to address this colossal failure of the UN. His death is a tragic loss to all Sudanese, especially to his own Nuba People.
Colonel Ibrahim Shams al-Din, on the other hand, was a notorious killer. As deputy defense minister, and one of the original 1989 coup masterminds, he was renowned for his role in mass slaughters such as that of Juba and Jebelein. Some analysts believed that his death, along with the other 15 commanders who died in the plane crash, occurred during a planning mission to mount another major scorched earth offensive to clear the oil field areas in the Adar area up to the Ethiopian border. His death was given intense publicity by the Khartoum military junta, and he was championed as a martyr.
It is tragic irony that despite all the international conferences on human rights; all the UN conventions and treaties; unending documentation from Special Rapporteurs, human rights groups, and independent observers, the international "System", allows people like Shams El Din and his military thugs to receive hundreds of millions of dollars of western oil company assistance; while people like Yusuf Kuwa and his hard working Nuba people -- honest, God fearing role models for tolerance and harmony -- are denied even the basic, fundamental right to humanitarian assistance and, indeed, life itself.
