High school's almost over, and adults need to understand our apathy
09:12 AM CDT on Thursday, March 29, 2007
It's spring, and something is in the air. It's quite contagious. Quite dangerous. And will definitely catch you unaware.
I'm sure there's some Latin-derived, hard-to-remember, unpronounceable name for this condition. But around here, we just call it Senioritis.
Now that we're in March, this condition is affecting millions of seniors around the nation. College acceptance letters are here, summer plans are being made and prom is looming.
Somehow, it seems that Senioritis is a condition that is either undetectable by adults or incomprehensible to them. Workloads for some reason are still just as big and require a good amount of effort. The problem is that we don't feel like exerting that effort. Maybe it's not even that; Senioritis is a case of apathy more than anything.
Most students already know about their college acceptance, and semester exam exemptions provide a lot of students with relief from the stress of these tests.
AP exams can give some students the push they need, right? You pay $50 an exam and have the possibility of college credit. But having the flexibility that they do, AP classes don't have a set list of preparations for the exams, and it's hard to buckle down and study for the three essays you will write.
Making Senioritis only worse are the mind-numbing, glazed-eyes-inducing classes that students sit through on a daily basis.
Here's a tip for teachers: We can sit around and read books at home.
Also, talking for almost an hour straight in front of seniors whose brains are running on empty probably isn't the best idea.
Sadly, Senioritis is dismissed by teachers and administrators as sheer laziness and procrastination. But it is a real challenge. The main problem for seniors is the lack of motivation. It is bad enough during the middle of the school year when we have to be prodded through projects and tests only by use of the unsaid threats of bad GPAs and failed college admissions. Take that away, and where's the drive to do anything?
Surprised?
You shouldn't be. This is the "What have you done for me lately?" era. As soon as something is no longer a requirement, say goodbye to a chance of quality work.
Now, seeing that Senioritis is not officially recognized by schools as an illness – when turning in an excused absence note, it's generally a bad idea to cite Senioritis as the illness that caused you to miss fifth period – some steps must be taken to raise awareness of this issue.
• Get a celebrity advocate. Well, of course no one's going to care when Jane Doe from Plano has Senioritis, but just wait until some girl on the Disney channel suffers the same disease. That's a big multiplier for the cause.
• Form a political action committee. Acquire the support of big-time puppets ... ahem ... I mean, members of Congress.
• Pick a color for the cause's wristband. Who says you can't be a fashionable advocate?
• Make sure to mention the meaning of your wristband to anyone who will listen.
• Take the wristband off when not in public to avoid a hideous tan line.
With a little effort on the public relations front, we can make Senioritis a legitimate mental and physical condition. Then again, we're probably too burned out to put forth that effort. ...
