US wants Darfur killing to end; spreads blame
WASHINGTON, Jan 27 (AFP) - The United States called for an immediate end to killing in Darfur, blaming Khartoum and Sudanese rebels.
"We've been appalled by the violent clashes and blatant violations of the cease-fire that have been happening in Darfur," US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said, referring to Sudan's troubled western region.
"All the parties -- the government of Sudan, the militias that are allied with the government and the rebels -- are to blame for this increase in violence," he said.
"It must stop immediately. And as we've always said, people who are involved in this violence must be held accountable."
Boucher joined British Foreign Minister Jack Straw, who earlier Thursday denounced the government's aerial bombing of a village, which was reported by the African Union.
Earlier Thursday, US lawmakers returning from Sudan urged President George W. Bush to do more for Darfur, after they visited four camps for refugees and displaced persons.
Accompanying them was actor Don Cheadle, nominated for an Oscar for his role in a film on an African genocide a decade ago, "Hotel Rwanda."
Outgoing US secretary of state Colin Powell on September 9 called the violence in Darfur "genocide," a move that drew scant attention from the international community.
The African Union has about 1,700 peacekeeping troops on the ground in Darfur and is charged with monitoring a ceasefire.
Around 70,000 people are estimated to have died, many from hunger and disease, in the past several months alone in Darfur.
Since war broke out two years ago, some 1.5 million people have been displaced, many into squalid and dangerous camps, largely as a result of attacks by Janjaweed militias. |
