Hassabo said that the state has held the National Conference on Media Issues as the first of the comprehensive reform conferences in the country, based on its belief on the importance of the media. The First Vice - President has reiterated the state commitment to implementation of the outcome of the National Conference on Media Issues. MO/MO ======= 1. Special attention should be given to titles. The writer should have been more specific in introducing the title in the first paragraph. The official involved is the (second vice-president). In the fourth paragraph, the official is erroneously identified as first vice-president. "The First Vice-President underscored the great and effective role of the media in leading the society and …" 2. Adjectives should be avoided or used sparingly, unless you are quoting. Consider the adjectives in the following sentence! "The First Vice-President underscored the great and effective role of the media in leading the society and …" Let the reader judge the role himself/herself, especially that the meaning of these two adjectives is implied in the verb ‘underscored’. "The First Vice-President underscored [the role of the media] in leading the society and …" 3. On first reference, a person is identified by his or her first and last named. On second reference, the person is referred to by his or her last name only. On ALL other references, pronouns can be used, especially when there are no other persons involved. In this story, the first name (Hassabo) is used instead of the last name i.e. Abdul-Rahman. Note: First names can be used when they are attached to titles. For example, Princess Diana, Prince Charles, Prince Williams, Queen Elizabeth, King Abdullah, etc. 4. It is clear that the writer confuses the concept of (state) with that of (government). 5. Smooth transitions are crucial in news writing. Adding a word or a phrase helps move the reader from one thought to another. Consider this sentence! "Hassabo has affirmed the government commitment to …" This sentence is the beginning of a new paragraph. Adding the word (also) achieves smooth transition. Here is the sentence after adding the word (also): "Hassabo has also affirmed the government commitment to …" Note: The use of the present perfect in the body of a news story is ‘unusual’ at best. Therefore, the verb in the above sentence and other similar sentences should be in the past tense (i.e. he also affirmed, underscored, warned, said). 6. "Hassabo has affirmed the government commitment to the national and societal dialogue, stressing that dialogue is the best means for uniting the national rank, which is a strategic goal for of the state." - Boundaries should be clearly defined between quoting and genuine writing. Consider the last part of the sentence in question, i.e. ‘…, which is a strategic goal for the state’. It is not clear whether this is the official’s view or the writer’s. One of the golden rules in news writing is: there is no room for ambiguity. To avoid ambiguity, the writer could have said something like ‘… which he described as a strategic goal for the (state)’. 7. Miscellaneous: (grammar, punctuation, etc.) - Tenses in the reported speech should be carefully used. See this sentence! "Hassabo said that the state has held …". The past tense "said" is used. Therefore, the following verb must be in the past (had). - In the writer's defence, structures in the following sentence are parallel; however, in a series, the coordinating conjunction ‘and’ is used only before the last part of the series. Commas are used instead. "The First Vice-President underscored the great and effective role of the media in leading the society and elevating the value of religion and protecting the faith and the homeland." And here is the sentence after replacing the first ‘and’ with a comma: "The First Vice-President underscored the great and effective role of the media in leading the society, elevating the value of religion and protecting the faith and the homeland." - Natural English is essential. It is clear that by (pre-issuance control) the writer means press censorship. It is also clear that (uniting the national rank) is a word-for-word rendition of the Arabic (توحيد الصف الوطني).
