Hey! Salam Ya عبدالغفار محمد سعيد and thanks for posting this advert! e And a big hi to all of you dear friends! e
Thanks especially to you, Tariq Al-Amin and Aisha Hommaida, for having such positive thoughts about me as an actor (after all this years, I must say!). And I loved what Alsunni Dafaa’Alla said! e
Well, despite the fact that I rarely do acting now, I would very much be tempted to apply for an audition if I saw an advert for a part like this; after all, I have been an asylum seeker stroke refugee for a while here in the UK, and, the curse of acting is still running in my blood, hence my clicking on this page on seeing the title! e
I haven’t done acting for ages, but recently I did a small role in a short film called Limbo (written by myself and director Lewie Kerr), but this was really out of desperation! We just couldn’t find another Sudanese actor. e (the main character was performed by Issam Al-Khawad) e
But seriously, I have to say I sometimes get slightly worried when I see adverts like this; films done about immigrants in the UK are often problematic in my opinion. e I once went to an audition for Sudanese actors for a film about the crises in Darfur; it was a well respected director and a big broadcasting corporation. I was shocked when I realise they were recruiting Moroccan actors to do the roles of the Arabs of darfur(!) Of course this is a strikingly appalling reduction and misunderstanding of the subject of their supposedly realistic film! (On my explaining to the person I met the blunter they committing, and that Darfur Arab tribesmen don’t look Moroccan in the slightest, but rather more like their counterparts, she told me that will be too complicated for a British audience and they have to make it simply Arab Versus Africans!) e
I don’t want to sound pessimistic though, specially on the light of what عبدالغفار has mentioned about the writer, and that wonderful words of the wonderful poet Benjamin Zephaniah about her as poet in her website (and, I just trust poets!) e So I will definitely check this out; it might turn out to be an interesting and challenging film! What’s embarrassing though is the mention of age… but it’s acting, isn’t it?! (I could act as young as that, surely, said the rusty actor, smilingly)! e
Salam to all H>K
(Sorry of responding in English to Arabic; I don’t have an access to an appropriate keyboard at the moment]

This honest answer implied on this quote provided here by our talented Sudanese poet and actor: Hafiz Khair speaks volumes about /and reveals the mischevious hidden agendas of some major Movie Industries in the West about any Mthing to do with Islam, in general, and Arabs, in particular.0

dear Tariq a.k.a wedzayneb ... e thanks for commenting on this complex issue of Western media and the representation of other cultures within it.... and, without diverting the post from its intended aim, I want to say that the issue, as I see it, is rather more complex... your careful sentence about (hidden agendas of some major Movie Industries in the West about any thing to do with Islam, in general, and Arabs, in particular....seems to indicate that you do appreciate the complexity of the issues involved anyway... though I was a bit reluctant to leave without commenting on the faint shades of “conspiracy theories” in the last part of your sentence...Apart for outright false and unfair representations you do find in Western media, you also sometimes find works that “idolise” their subjects or glamorize the “foreign” way of living of such and such nation (Arab Bedouin tribes for example) which, for me, is another face of the same coin of failing to look at other cultures on equal footing as your own! that's why it is indeed a complex issue to discuss... I think some filmmakers, never mind the good intentions, take issues of representation just a bit too lightly (echoes of Edward Saied's Orientalism has to resonate in the background of any discussion of the sort, of course)… and there are also some wonderful articles written by Hassan Musa, from slightly different point of view, on Sudan for All website, which I find fascinating and revealing
I promise to talk and discuss this more with you in another opportunity (just don't want to divert this post too much)... mmeanwhile, acept my warmest greetings
H>K
