wildcats get revenge

WYLIE -- For Plano Senior (6-1, 3-1), revenge was best served by defeating Wylie, 35-7, on the Pirates’ homecoming. Plano lost to Wylie, 20-10, last season, but defeated the Pirates (3-4, 2-2) this year, 35-7, and put a damper on the homecoming spirit.
“Wylie beat us last year on our Homecoming, and we knew that they had a tremendous football program here and a very well-coached team, and our guys really did a good job tonight,” said Gerald Brence, Plano head coach. “It was a big game for us tonight. Big game for us.”
The game started out looking like a big one, or at least the quick one that it was. On their first drive, Wylie got on the scoreboard after a drive that began with a near fumble and loss of yardage by quarterback Jerod Monk. The score came with 7:32 left in the first quarter when running back Nicholas Duvall took the ball in from 2 yards out for the touchdown, having made the last two offensive gains for Wylie.
Plano kept the offensive attack on pace and scored on its first drive as well. Despite a 10-yard penalty and a no-gain run attempt by junior quarterback Carson Meger, the Wildcats would go on to score after three consecutive gains by junior running back Rex Burkhead. Burkhead forced the ball in from 2 yards out, followed by junior kicker Ryan McDuff’s extra-point conversion.
“They were going no-haul, playing really fast, and we always go fast,” Brence said. “The last two weeks our opponents took the opening kick-off and went down to score, but our defense shut them down the rest of the way.”
The Pirates’ offense was done scoring for the game, but the overall offensive game was down for both teams for the remainder of the first half. Plano started the second quarter with a false start followed by an interception on Meger’s scrambling pass by Wylie’s Alan Menchaca. The interception was topped off with a 15-yard facemask penalty. Despite Wylie punting on the next possession, Plano didn’t regain its offensive game right away either. The next drive included two more penalties, a sack and a fumble.
“There are always areas we need to improve in, and this is obviously one we have to work on,” said Brence regarding the penalty situation.
Meger’s next drive would contain another sack, but the offense would pick things up in the same drive. Meger, who would pass for 120 yards in the first half, had a 44-yard pass to senior receiver Grant Davis, along with a couple of connections to Burkhead on a drive that ended in Meger rushing for the 8-yard touchdown with less than one minute left in the half. That score was followed by a fruitless Wylie attack. On the evening, Wylie’s Monk would pass for just 130 yards.
Coming out of the halftime break Plano continued putting the points and penalties up, creating a separation Brence said he was proud of. After a false start, Plano followed a 2nd-and-15 play for 24 yards as Meger connected with junior receiver Kris Lott. Lott would run the ball in for the score from inside the 10-yard line to give the Wildcats a 20-7 advantage.
Plano’s offense did continue with turbulent play in the third as Meger was sacked, a false start was called and Wylie’s Daniel Jordan intercepted a Meger pass, all consecutively.
But in what became its Jekyll and Hyde pattern, the offense picked up in the fourth quarter and scored on the very first play after the kick-off return. In what Brence would call, “one of the best runs you’ll see,” Burkhead sprinted 45 yards for the score.
He would follow with another score in the same minute, taking the ball in from 1-yard out after senior Kenny Watkins intercepted a Wylie pass.
With the score 35-7 and more than 10 minutes left, Plano put the game on cruise control and inserted the second team with senior Michael Sheffield at the helm. Despite no more major offensive gains, Brence said he saw good plays from his running unit. The defense, after the onset, only allowed the Pirates 73 rushing yards.
Plano’s victory puts the Wildcats into a tie with Plano East for second place in District 9-5A. The Wildcats face Plano West (4-3, 2-2) Friday at Clark Stadium.
