Several towns in White Nile and El Gezira states and eastern Sudan’s Sennar are extremely short of cooking gas and flour.
The towns of Kosti, El Gezira Aba, El Duweim, and the capital of Rabak in White Nile state are badly hit.
A resident of Rabak told Radio Dabanga that the cooking gas and flour prices are soaring on the black market. He described life in the state, south of Khartoum, as “difficult in all aspects”.
The shortage of cooking gas also led to sky rocketing prices in Wad Madani, capital of El Gezira state. “A cylinder now costs SDG250 ($41),” he reported. “People there stand in lines before the distribution centres for days without getting an LPG cylinder.”
In Sennar state, most bakeries shut their doors a week ago because of a lack of flour.
A listener said that the cooking gas crisis started more than six months ago. “The people register their names on growing lists without getting cooking gas. Even the black market is short of LPG cylinders.”
