Five members of the Sudanese Athletics Team were convicted in Khartoum on Sunday for wearing ‘inappropriate dress’.
The Public Order Court of Jebel Awlia in southern Khartoum state sentenced each of them to pay a fine of SDG500 ($82).
On 28 November, police officers held ten members (three women and seven men) of the National Athletics Team for wearing ‘indecent dress’ while they were training at the White Nile beach near Jebel Awlia.
Five of the team members were charged under article 152 of the Sudanese Criminal Code regarding ‘obscene and indecent acts’, while five others were released after showing their military identity cards.
Siddig Ahmed Ibrahim, the Secretary of the Athletics Federation told the court that the uniforms worn by the athletics are recommended by the International Association of Athletics Federations.
