In the year 1980. The Students Union (Islamic front) decided to go for a general election againist the wishes of all the other student organizations. The atmosphere was very tense. All the opposing organizations and political parties made their intensions clear. The Umma group issued statement : there will be no elections as long as there is an Umma Party. The Democratic front decided to boycot and prevent the elections. The Islamic front had already prepared for war. They made a military battalion armed with sticks and metal bars . They called their battalion(Liwa Almugahedeen). They marched up and down the university street and the inner roads in a show of force with their usual slogans (Allahu Akbar). On the eve of the election, their leader (Almutasim Abdalrahim) addressed his audiance in a very intimidating manner ( He shouted: To the Leader of the Mugahideen Brigade: Put down your Whip and raise up your sword and ride your horse until you get rid of all the communists, By God's will we will turn the blue nile into a river of blood. The devoted followers shouted : Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar and slept fully inflated ready to explode the next morning. The orders came to all the members of the Democratic front to arm themseves with pocket Knives for self defence. The following morning The students, I mean the armies met in front of the Chanceler's office. The war began and concluded with many wounded from both sides. All the parties involved took care of their wounded.
At Khartoum's old hospital and in a wide spaced ward, there were several wounded soldiers, I mean students under the nursing care. Visitors from both sideds came to see their fellow members. That is when the student Alghali met his fellow agricultural class mate: Abdulsalam. According to Khalid Khalafalla, a fellow Atbarawi and well known to both of them, when Alghali saw Abdalsalam, he left his patient's bedside and rushed towards Abdalsalam, holding a Motor Cycle chain and swinging it while pushing forward towards him. Abdalsalam kept rereating backwards and backwards untill there was no place else to go. He was cornered to the wall. and the so called Alshaheed Alghali kept swinging the chain towards him. Abdulsalam at this point pulled out his pocket knife and stapped his viscious attacker. Alghali fell to the ground. Khalid went to his side and held him inside the hospital ward untill the medical team took over. Mr Ahmed Abdalaziz couldn't save his life. The news of his death crept out pretty fast. The already inflated folloers went to the death prayers, meanwhile, The chanceler, Dr Ali Fadul, decided to close the University..
When they came back from their prayers, they turned into prutal terrorist creatures and started hunting all their opponents, specifically, the members of the democtatic front and their followers. In Alrazi-Hasseb complex, they watched the gate from a distance, and as soon as they see one of their victims, they would surround and close the circle around him and start their sticks and metal bars on him. A member of the Bathist party was sick in his bed with Malaria and was not a witness to what had happened. They attacked him like stray rapid dogs and started hitting and chanting untill his metal bed was boken and bent. You could immagine
how many bones in his body remained intact after this. .
They started a systematic search of all their opponents rooms, broke their closets and stole their private valuable. A friend of mine complained that thet tokk his watch and all his family photographs. They called it (Ghanaim) Wasn't it a Gihaad war afterall?.
Abdalsalam was tried and found not guilty by vertue of self defence. Khalid who was an eye witness was approached by the Islamic front- lead student union, when he told them his vertue of the story, he was never called by the prosecution.
Finally, when the University reopened, we were told that one of the barax dining rooms will be re-named after Alshaheed Alghali. I stop here and in my mind what Gameel Buthaina said about his Gihad.
