Dear Khatim:
Thank you for sending your last column directly to me.
I normally get your pieces from my first cousin(Ibn
Khali) Baha Eldeen Bakri of Doha, Qatar. It just
feels good to have some reciprocity when attempting to
do anything in this world. As the common saying goes:
it takes two to tango.

As for Abdulla Ali Ibrahim, I saw the guy once in
Boston,MA in Jun. 1999 while he was participating in
Sudan's Studies Association Conference. He was
presenting a paper on Tijani Yousif Bashir. Sure
enough the guy seemed and sounded eccentric to me.
But, I think he uses this eccentricity to hide who he
really is. I mean the guy is getting in touch with
his true self. By this I mean he, and most of
Sudanese intellectuals, is just getting in touch with
that lurking Koaz in their deep psyche. This is the
Sudanese Intellectual Syndrome! And Abdulla Ali
Ibrahim is now exhibiting the symptoms of that
syndrome.
I describe that lurking KOAZ as some degree of
venality operating in the minds of most Sudanese
intellectuals. In addition to being venal a lot of
Sudanese intellectuals have developed total physical
and psychological dependency on the Sudanese STATE.
In fact, they regard it as their surrogate mother.
You just can't wean Sudanese intellectuals from the
benefits which have been provided to them by the state
and they normally take for granted. They get free
education from A to Z- an education that is associated
with countless privileges. And at Khartoum University
they get spoiled big time. In fact, they receive
mental and psychological training which make some of
them act like masters of the very people who paid the
cost of their education and training.
Some of those who come from poor backgrounds would
definitely don't want to go back and deal with the
reality from which they have come. Ali Osman, Mahdi
Ibrahim and most of the Ingaz thugs are a case in
point.
Few of the intellectuals maintain their moral
integrity. But, when the chips are down, they run off
or leave and seek refuge in the Gulf,Europe, or North
America. At the very least these guys don't hurt
their people. Rather, they help them save face and
dignity by protecting their folks from the hardships
of life created by our insane governments. I consider
myself part of this bunch.
Fewer still are people like Abd Alkhalig Mahgoub. I
think he is the ultimate example of intellectual and
moral integrity. I always argue that had he not been
executed in 1971, he would have contributed a great
deal to the dismantling of the Stalinsit mold in which
the community party is now operating.
You and others like you have courageously broken away
from those suffocating circles. I would bet that
Abdul Elkahlig would have understood that the mold he
had helped creating was no longer viable to deal with
the current transformations our world has been
experiencing.
Fourtnately, the legacy of Abd Alkhalig has not been
completely extinguished. Ali Fadul and many other
heros have paid with their lives as did Abd Alkhalig
in 1971. Others have bravely endured the Islamic
brand of torture conducted in the notrious Gohst
Houses. A third group have withered away in jails and
detentions all over Sudan. So, Abudl Khalig legacy
lives on as you have correctly surmized.

What I want to say is that such courage and and
intellectual integrity enjoyed by Abul Alkhalig and
his likes are hard to come by.
And most of our intellectuals have not been put
through difficulties and challenges that would truly
contribute to the building of their characters.
Again, they had it easy from elementary school to
being sent to do graduate studies abroad at the
expense of the their kind mother otherwise known as
Sudanese state.
So, when life gets hard and the nany state is no
longer there, most of the elite opt for the easy
solutions. Just sell out. Please those who hold the
reins of power. Ingratiate to them if necessary. I
have come back to you Ma Ma state, give me any job in
the government and I promise to behave!!
I am just trying to offer an explanation. I hope I
didn't come off as judgemental or a puritan. I myself
suffer from some symptoms of the aforementioned
syndrome. In 1990,when I took my first job in Canada
as a security guard, that was a real and hard test for
me. I mean having to work in a job that is considered
as a menial job. The Canadians who worked with me
were a lot younger. And they characterized these jobs
as character builders. They didn't have any struggle
with the work per se.
This is the kind of training our younger generations
must be receiving.
Can I just abruptly end by asking this: could it all
be about money? Please get back to me about my
thoughts.
