Sorry to write in English but this PC has no Arabic support. I think you mean the questions in the post that I have quoted below, because I have answered all your previous questions and I was waiting for you to touch on the cores that I have suggested.
Anyhow, I might not be the best person to write about Dr. Stephen Howard but I can say that he commands a good Arabic language that enabled him to understand the thoughts of Alustaz Mahmoud beside the material written in english. I will wait for others to answer your questions, especially that I have no Arabic support. But I shall convey to you and the readers a concise report that Dr. Stephen had shared with the Republicans a year ago after his visit to Sudan. I hope it will help a bit.

An Islamic journey is defined by its intention. The traveler, the visitor, the pilgrim are sent off from one place and welcomed in another in a manner that indicates how they connect the people at the two points. And in the act of traveling the traveler is transformed and promotes the transformation of those at each stop of his journey. This transformation is not necessarily through the agency of the traveler himself, but indicates that those encountered along the traveler’s path are themselves ready to be transformed.
It had been 12 years since I had visited Sudan. I had, of course, kept in constant contact; a dozen or so brothers and sisters had worked with me at my university; many more had stopped by for visits and I visited them across the US, the UK, Europe, and Egypt. I had even tried to get to Sudan twice before during the previous 12 years but failed to do so due to the political conditions. Finally, I was determined to see my dear friends in Sudan again and brother IzalDin Sadiq worked hard with me to make it happen.
This trip, from 1-25 January, was an intensely moving adventure. I was impressed with the level of accomplishment of the brothers and sisters inside Sudan, their great knowledge of and interest in what was happening to the brothers outside, and with the intensity and growth of their continued spiritual development. And of course, I was amazed at Sudan’s changes as well, particularly the catastrophic growth of Khartoum and the phenomenon of mobile phones! But the essential memories of this trip were 1) its emotional warmth, 2) its thought-provoking rigor, and 3) its non-stop action. I was frequently close to tears as I met brothers I hadn’t seen in more than a decade, a hard thing to admit in the midst of the ‘Ja’li’ attitude of many of you…
The air trip from Columbus, Ohio to Khartoum on Ethiopian Airlines is 27 hours and grueling. I landed at Khartoum on 3 January at 3 in the morning and was met by brothers inside the customs area. I was taken by the hand for the rest of the journey and not let go. Ustaz AbdelLatif met me at the airport at that early hour with about 8 brothers and sisters including IzalDin, Mohammed AbdelBaggi, Mohammed Madzoub, and Talab and Nowal. We went to Mohammed’s house in Taif, chatting for another hour or so, and then for an hour or so of sleep before the first event, visiting Sheikh Idris at WadElafung. There were close to 75 brothers, sisters and children on that visit, which was followed by a jelsa-fatur in WadElafung. Later that night there was another jelsa with inshad and Qur’an at the home of Ustaz AbdleLatif and I stayed at Mohammed Madzoub’s house.
Credit for the beautiful design of this journey goes to akh IzalDin Sadiq. His generosity and knowledge of where people were, parts of the country that I would like to see, and his cellular phone all contributed to making the trip happen. That first weekend was deep immersion into the Republican life of old, visits to brothers’ houses, beyut al farash, and visits to others who were ill. Gibril Yusuf was my haras that first weekend as well, pleasing so many brothers and sisters with Qur’an wherever we went. That first Saturday, my second day in Sudan, we went early in the morning to the shrine of Sheikh Ali Mirghani in Bahri with a group of brothers and sisters numbering 40 or so. And that evening there was a jelsa at the Thowra home of Ustaz AbdelLatif. The next morning IzalDin and I visited Bashir wad um Bashir at his very ‘darwish” home and then I visited Awad Sadiq at his school in Khartoum. The evening’s jelsa was in Wad Bakheit where I was deeply impressed by the new and strong community of brothers there- in new homes- and by Abdalla Fadlala’s exhibit marking the 18th anniversary of the tamfith… And finally we visited the cemetery where Ikhlas and Salah are buried.
Thinking about this trip from the United States I was uncertain as to how difficult it would be to get outside of Khartoum; I was unsure if I would be able to obtain permission to travel under the current circumstances. But interestingly, once I had my passport registered, there were no further questions or taftish and we set off for Medani the next day. I was amazed to see the developments along the Medani road; the new improved “Cafeteria Hafiz,” the automobile plant, the expanded Um Magid… And cell phones came into play again. As we reached the outskirts of Medani, IzalDin called ahead to Ustaz Daffallah Mousa’s house and we were met at the cemetery by a large group of brothers ready to greet us in the presence of Ustaz Sayed and Ustaz Jelal. We had fatur with Daffallah- and again I was impressed as to how large the gathering was- and we visited the homes of Sayed and Jelal to pay respects. There was a jelsa latifa at Daffallah’s house that evening and the next morning breakfast with Salah Mokhtar.
I visited my old house at the University of Gezira- Neshasheeba and at asur a car-ful of us went to Abu Haraz for a visit to Sheikh Yusuf and Hamad-a-Nil al-Araki that could only be described as roh shaded. That night we buried two relatives of Talab Zharan who had been killed on the Medani road and it was turned into a Republican burial with appropriate inshad at the gravesite.
The next day, Wednesday the 8th of January, we made our way to Rufa’a via the eastern route. Waiting this long to get to Rufa’a was a good test of my patience and indeed, when we finally arrived, I was overcome. I could hardly talk while trying to greet Ustaz Khalid elHaj, and Mowtasim and AbdelGadir Mohammed el Hassan, Hajja Rhoda and everyone there whom I love so much. There was a jelsa everynight in Rufa’a and during the day we visited awlia and akhwan in the area including Hijaleej, Tamboul, and the farash at Hudayba.
The theme of the jelsat with Khalid in Rufa’a had been preparation for the memorial of the 18th of January. And I was delighted that in the process of thinking about this Khalid el Haj decided to join our wafd, thus making it official. It had been a little miskeen to that point, consisting of just Amin Abdalla Lotfi (my harras) and myself. So Khalid added a new dimension to the visit and we set off for Medani and El Gaderef the next week. At every stop I was immensely impressed at how thirsty brothers and sisters were to listen to Khalid’s articulate and expansive message, and how his stamina permitted him to deliver such strong statements of an hour or more each night. Again with mobile phones, we signaled ahead in El Gederef that we were close and we were met at the door of Ihklas Himit’s family home with an intense zikkir.
From El Gedaref we set off the next morning for Medani and I was thrilled that Sheikh Ali met us there and joined our wafd. It turned out that Damizin was prohibited to foreigners so I would not be able to see Sheikh Ali otherwise. More brothers and sisters had joined us at Gederef and Medani and we set off for Sennar from there. The atmosphere within the wafd was warm and beautiful and the “mini-wafud” that set off from this wafd- for fatha or to see the ill or a particular wali made the trip even more intense. Khalid el Haj spoke of the wafd as generating a-sadiq, muhabba, wa ihklas, and these were shared with everyone en route.
At Sennar the sisters stayed with Yusuf Ali Yusuf and the brothers with Naji in Wad Hashim. We set off early the next morning for our most intense Sufi day with visits to Sheikh El Tom and Musa Abgusa- deep into the Gezira. It took hours to get across the dry fields and irrigation canals but the visits were spectacular. Khalid spoke of how he had wanted to see these saints for 20 years. At each tomb we prayed and had inshad- the wafd was now complete with both sheyukh and munshidiin.
Later that day we drove to Kenana, fulfilling a wish that Mohammed Adam had made back in Medani. Kenana was intense, I counted 70 brothers and sisters at the evening jelsa, and another 50 the next morning. Later that day we toured the sugar plantation a bit and then on to Kosti. But en route we dropped Sheikh Ali at the Rubek station; he had to get back to work. There I witnessed something so simple and yet so magnificent in terms of the Republican concept of al-mua’mala. In the cab of the car in front of us, driven by Ahmed Abusin, one of the sisters was struggling with her baby son who needed to relieve himself. A young brother in the back of the boxsi jumped down and grabbed the kid through the window, placed him on the ground where he did his business, pulled his pants back up and promptly handed the child back to his mother- all taking a minute or less. I thought about how hard it would be to get an American teenager to perform such an act of service, without complaint, and realized this was the Republican idea in action.
At Kosti, at the home of ElTayib Mohammed el Hassan, we learned of the arrest of Abdalla and the confiscation of his exhibit. This changed the tone of the wafd to some extent and certainly did remind one of the baddest of old days. We carried on, trying to find out what had happened as we made our way back to Medani, but folks were still on the high from the experience of the wafd. At Medani I was thrilled to see Isam elBushi, Sulaiman Wasila, Abdullahi Tom and family, farewells at Daffallah’s house and then on to Rufa’a late at night.
We left the Gezira for Khartoum two days later amidst talk that I was denying ‘nas khartoum’ the pleasure of my company. Every night there were visits and I was so excited to see Ahmed Mohammed el Hassan, Asim Shaheen, Asim Hamid, Isam Khidr- brothers I realized that I had really missed all these years. Talab organized visits to Omdurman Alia University and Ahfad University which were very useful and insightful, and I went to the Khartoum International Fair with Mahmoud Mohammed AbdelBaggi.
On Thursday, the 23rd at asur we took three cars of people out to Um Duwamban for a spectacular visit with the Sufis and awlia there. Everyone was deeply moved. As we got ready to leave, a number of brothers took out their “mobiles” to catch up with al-duniya. I asked Amin Abdalla Lotfi why he didn’t have one. “Andi,” he replied, reaching into his pocket and handing me his hajer teeimom….
