Constitutional Commission Discuss Human Rights
The Commission of the National Constitution Review on Sunday witnessed a lively and heated debate over the issues relevant to Human Rights, and the possibility of including Children, Aged, and Women Rights in the constitution.
“The discussions have centered on the report of the relevant subcommittee and the question of human rights in particular. This was followed by a lengthy, lively and heated debate, with the conferees coming to the conclusion that the documents on these rights should either be given a special chapter or be attached as a document to the body of the Interim Constitution”, Co-spokesperson of the Commission, Ambassador Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed told the daily press briefing on Sunday.
He said the debate would continue and the final conclusion would be submitted to the committee for final formation.
Dirdiri said women rights were included in the draft Interim Constitution that guarantees all rights and all freedoms which the government has endorsed upon accepting all the international Charters and conventions.
But he pointed out that the government has not yet ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and that this was an executive step that has nothing to with the over all principle and policies set in the constitution.
Yasser Arman, the Co-spokesperson of the commission has pointed out that the human rights document was an important one and that it is related to the development of the political, economic and social life in the country.
He pointed out that women have proposed that women representation within the all state apparatus should range between 25%-30%.
He said debates continue on all these issues.
