Job Description
RESPONSIBLE TO: Project Coordinator / Medical rdinator
RESPONSIBLE FOR: National medical staff
LOCATION: Nyala- Darfur
START DATE: ASAP
DURATION: 6-12 Months
ALLOWANCE: £1,000 - £1,500 per month - dependent on relevant experience. Plus comprehensive insurance cover, accommodation, return flights, a per diem ($25) to cover daily living expenses, and holiday allowance of $145 per month.

Programme Summary
The goal of the Sudan mission is to address humanitarian and health crises within Sudan, with particular focus on the rapidly escalating emergency in Darfur, through a rapid mobilisation of essential primary healthcare interventions. Over one million people are now displaced since the commencement of hostilities in the Darfur region, many of whom are in acute need of emergency assistance. The approaching rains & forthcoming food shortages due to the absence of a next harvest will further exacerbate these needs. Merlin are operational in Nyala for PHC activities including maternal and reproductive health, through a series of outreach and static service delivery. Merlin builds close links with the MoH and other agencies to provide a comprehensive response to meet the needs of the beneficiaries in the target areas.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Medical Coordinator will be responsible for technical management of the program and will also have an advisory and liaison role in full collaboration with the Project Coordinator and team. Merlin also proposes to conduct future field assessments in other selected areas of Darfur. The Medical Coordinator will be actively involved in these assessments and proposal writing for these projects.
The Medical Coordinator will therefore have the following roles and responsibilities:
Design a framework for technical interventions for a comprehensive PHC program for 3 IDP sites and links with existing health facilities.
Develop and implement an IMCI (Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses) program of curative and preventive healthcare, to respond to all key childhood diseases including, diarrhoeal disease, ARI, malaria, meningitis, skin and eye diseases and other presenting illnesses.
Develop and implement a comprehensive maternal health program for antenatal, intra partum and post natal care for all pregnant women.
Support identification and training of community health workers to conduct health education, support to EPI and other outreach activities in the target camps.
Organize a full scale nutritional assessment for all children <5 years to determine appropriate interventions for response to malnutrition.
Support identified responses for nutrition interventions in accordance with the results of the nutritional assessment.
Develop a basic health information system for collection and analysis of essential data for Maternal and Child health interventions.
Design a supervision plan for support and supervision to midwives and TBAs in the community.
Develop a Monitoring & Evaluation system for the program in collaboration with Merlin team, UN agencies and INGOs who are working in the area.
Liaise with UN agencies, INGOs and local authorities as appropriate for design and implementation of all echnical activities.
Undertake weekly, monthly and quarterly report writing as appropriate to the needs of the program and donor requirements.
Support training and development of the Merlin national staff and expatriate team members on all health interventions in accordance with identified gaps in knowledge and skill areas.
SKILLS NEEDED FOR THIS POSITION:
A Medical Doctor or Nurse with at least three years of field based experience in public health preferably in emergency relief programs.
Experience in programme management including staff supervision, programme design, implementation and monitoring and report writing
Experience in multi-cultural, multi-national work settings
In addition the post holder must demonstrate:
Willingness to live in team accommodation and be prepared to travel to frequently
Previous experience in Africa or in other emergency situations.
2 or more years working in insecure remote environments
capacity to work in the complex emergencies situation
ability to speak and understand Arabic (desirable)
