Darfur Friends,
The African American Art Museum in Philadelphia officially inaugurated last night The Children of Darfur Art Exhibit. The event was very successful attended by more than 170, and continued from 5-9pm.
The program was very rich, diverse in bringing many groups that strongly active in the issue of Darfur here in Philadelphia… However, the Darfur voices were especially powerful and present along the 3-hr program.
Three generations of Darfurian women spoke: A grandma (habouba); her daughter, and two of her grandchildren. They spoke from the bottom of their hearts on the atrocities they went through and how their families and villages are destroyed… “why this is happening to us? Why I’m losing members of family everyday?” Arwa, crying, left this question hanging over, motivating us to do more to stop this disgusting crime against humanity…
Ramona Risco, President and CEO of the Museum, and Dr. Diane turner, curator, spoke on the role of the arts and museums in reaching out to the community and responding to crisis like Darfur…
Faith-based groups from Islam, Christianity, and Judaism spoke eloquently on the engagement of their congregation to help.. Dr. Jerry Ehrlich, of the Doctors without Borders who brought with him the children’s drawings, gave a powerful short presentation…the amazing students of Swarthmore College spoke humbly on their efforts to raise money to support the African Union forces in their one-year national campaign (www.genocideinterventionfund.org) …
The African American poet Sandra Turner-Barnes read a new poem she wrote for Darfur… the Clarinet player Ryan Bates played one of the most beautiful pieces I heard of this instrument… it brought to my mind all memories sitting in peace by the banks of Wadi Nyala or Dahab Sharrou Wadi near Zalingi in west Darfur.. Thanks Ryan for this great music..
The convener of Million Women March (1997) was the last speaker, closing the event by a special message addressed especially to the African American women to make their voice loud in stopping this crime…
Thanks to all of you for continuing to work to stop this crime…
