UN Delegation Visits Soba Aradi, Calls for End to Forced Relocation
A high-level United Nations delegation visited Soba Aradi squatter area yesterday to monitor the situation following Thursday’s forced relocation and exchange of fire which lead to a number of deaths and injuries of both IDPs and police officers and the torching of the Soba Aradi pro-government Popular Committee’s office and the local police station
The UN delegation was led by Gemmo Lodesani, the Deputy UN Humanitarian Coordinator (North) and included UN Human Rights, Protection and Advocacy officials. The delegation was relieved to find that the situation in Soba Aradi was relatively calm with police and military forces having partially withdrawn from the area
The delegation met with NGO representatives working the camp, tribal leaders, and former Popular Committee members
UN Human Rights and Protection officials are currently discussing next steps. The UN said it is working closely with the government of Sudan (GoS) at this time to raise its concerns with regard to forced relocation, demolitions and forced return. Stakeholders are encouraged to petition Gos to end such practices which constitute human rights abuses, and can lead to significant loss of life.
