Dear Bint Elahfad,
Best wishes and luck for your exam results. I agree with you that you may be romantic (believe it or not) as one of the meanings of romance is “remoteness from everyday life”! One of the problems we suffered with in the past and still do is the intrusiveness of those who ask us to be more religious and better believers, and while I am not suggesting that you are one of them, I think, and I may be wrong, we do not like as a nation to be told how to worship God and hence the lack of response to such calls as you noted. Young people generally tend to be less religious than the old, and I think this true for all religions and people and not only the Islam and Sudanese.
I have always been intrigued: why Muslims live their lives and think about hell all the time? Other religions tend to emphasise words like love, forgiveness etc!! Worse still, some of them who say their prayers on time and recite the Quran, think that this is enough to make them preachers and better Muslim than others, and get frustrated and sometimes violent when they get ignored!!. They get ignored because their message dose not meets the needs of the receivers (eg less good Muslims like us as you suggested): thank you very much the time, place and circumstances that made you a presumably “better” Muslim happen not to coincide with mine, and will do it when I can if I want to. If someone dose not want to adhere to the rituals of Islam or decided to do later in her/his life, and for that matter bring up their children the way they like, I think they should be accepted as Muslim, if they said they are, without making any value judgement for Only God can do that. Also, I do not think you need to worry about them or about Islam from them.
I agree with you, however, that it would be nice and in fact fair if people worship God only because they like to and not due to social pressures (which you inadvertently applied on Sudanese). This, however, will open the question of what about people who want to come in and out of Islam? At the moment only “in” is allowed and I think when the argument is strong we do not need the sword to protect it.
I hope I have not upset you in anyway or form, and if I did it is certainly not my intention.
