“The Passion of the Christ” which I also watched last week, is the same real bible story that has been watched all over the world in different languages acted by different actors for decades now if not centuries.
Yes it is more graphic than other versions of the same story of Jesus betrayal, agony, death and resurrection.. But the meaning of all that is so deep and profound in terms of theologizing each phrase uttered by the Lord Jesus specially during the last 12 hours of his death on the cross.
The movie is showing at this time of the year because it is a time when Christians are observing 40 days of meditation, prayers and fasting in commemoration of the suffering of the savior Jesus Christ. The 40 days ends by what is known as Easter to most of us, when Christians, mainly catholic celebrate the rise of Jesus from death.
In terms of explicit and violent details of the film, I don’t think it exceeds what we see in so many Hollywood action and horror movies over which no one expresses concern, except by saying it is not suitable for young viewers. The so-called holocaust movies which portray the Nazists against Jewish in some instances were exaggerated intentionally to draw attention and attract sympathy. Yet no one said anything as it provokes sentiments against German people, as a matter of fact, due to continuous pressure as a result of the holocaust series of movies and other forms of activism, the Jewish people at least got some reparation.. But what happened to black people in north America during 400 years of slavery, equivalent to more than 400 holocausts, did not unfortunately shake an eye brow..
I believe it is all about politics and timing. The Jewish community, organizations, and lobby groups have been enjoying a lot more solid grounds lately, with regard to their continuous struggle and strive for concur and ultimate defeat of their common enemies.. A fact which became more obvious after the war against terrorism was declared and used as a new tool for political gains.. So they cannot afford seeing this kind of movie coming out at this particular time of their Hippocratic progress. Passion of the Christ is a real life story that no one can deny.. I guess they would also want to tell us that there is no evidence of the story of Jesus Christ.. Amen.
