ABOUT HAQIBA.....
Haqibah (pronounced Hagee-ba) is the fundamental musical style that underlies modern Sudanese popular music. In it's original form, which appeared in the early 1920's, it sounded very similar to the Muslim sufi gospel chants known as 'Madeeh,' from which it derived.
In Haqibah, the 'Riq',(similar to a tamborine) is played by the lead singer.
A chorus of three or more backing singers clap along rhythmically. The abscence of harmonic instruments, rendered haqibah a predominantly vocal art, similar to accapella singing. The pace is brisk, the timing masterful and the singing melodious and cursive, bearing the characteristic sweetness of the pentatonic musical scale that pervades the music of the African Horn (Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia).
As Instruments became available, Haqibah musicians adapted triangles and cymbals as well as the piano and Qanun (Middle Eastern Lyre). This expansion was partially due to Egyptian influence. Haqibah artists often traveled to Cairo, and record their music on vinyl there. These visits and the cultural ties with Egypt gave them exposure to Eastern 'Sharqi' musical influences.
The city of Omdurman is the Mecca of Haqibah artists and fans. Omdur is the People's capital; built on the eve of the liberation of Khartoum by the founder of the modern state, Mohammed Ahmed Al-Mahdi (late 19th century), Omdurman became a melting pot for all Sudanese tribes and cultures. Most of the Haqibah greats, (poets and singers alike), lived there. This is the reason why this city is frequently mentioned in the lyrics of this genre. The two most notable musicians of the Haqibah genre were Sarour and Karoma. Karoma, alone, is believed to have contributed about eighty percent of all Haqibah tunes known today. Sarour is known to have sung the first song that bears the Haqibah classification. That song was 'Babki-wu-Banooh-wu-Bassayih' penned by the reknown poet Ibrahim Al-Abbadi.
Today Haqibah is alive and well. Upcoming singers validate their abilities by adopting their favourite Haqibah songs in their performances and recordings. The authentic sound of this genre captures the essence of a rich Sudanese heritage.
This genre introduced two types of stars; poets and singers. Amongst them are:
