What is torture?
Torture is any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspect of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity it does not include pain or suffering arising only form, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanction.
The effects of torture include depressing, fear, irritability, anxiety, introversion, lethargy, disturbed memory, and loss of concentration, headaches, visual problems and sexual disorders etc. Torture effect extends beyond the individual to other members of the family and ultimately the whole social fabric is permeated with fear and terror.
The American African Foundation Against torture (SVTG) ------------------
SVTG is an independent, Non governmental and non- profit organization. established in 1993 by Sudanese torture and human rights activis
Victims of torture are from different religions, races, social background and political opinions.
SVTG membership is open to all Sudanese victims of torture who could support and realize its goals and objectives.
SVTG is not affiliated with any political group or party. It assist both victims of torture and their families on the one hand, and resist all forms of torture on the other.
Goals and Objectives:-
SVTG seek to realize the following objectives and goals.
To combat torture:-
*- To mobilize public opinion against and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and punishment.
*-To create strong relationship with other anti-torture and human rights organizations, centers, Institutions and individual figures at national and international levels.
*-To support the educational and practical efforts of national and international institution in the campaign against all form of torture.
*- To collect and document data and information concerning all form of torture in Africa and rehabilitation methods,
*- To carry out interdisciplinary researches and Studies for struggle against all form of torture.
For Victims:-
*- To provide both physical and psychological treatment to victims of torture.
*- to run a comprehensive training and rehabilitation program for victims of torture.
*- To provide counseling and advice to victims.
*- To provide guidance for educational and training rehabilitation.
*- To train victims so that they can be self dependent and again self confidence.
Medical treatment and Rehabilitatio
*- To seek to reinforce and foster relationship between members and raise their awareness to combat torture,
Documentation and publication:-
*- To publish a periodical newsletter concerned with AAFAT activities and to fellow up various forms of abuses and torture AAFAT will publish a brochure, reports, and other document pertaining to its activities and torture.
*- In cooperation with interested centers, institutions and individuals, collects and document information on torture in addition to studies of torture.
Structure of SVTG:-
SVTG managed by an executive committee assisted by voluntary experts form different centers and institutions concerned with ant-torture and human rights activities victims themselves administer the organization.
SVTG accept unconditional donations and grants that do not affect its independence.
