Witness account of someone who was at the demonstration on 29th of December 2005:
The Sudanese refugees located in Egypt, so overwhelmed by their problems and their situation and the lack of attention to their problems and situation from the international community or the Egyptian government, have began a demonstration that has never been done before. Around 3,000 of them, men, women, children, began a protest outside of the UNHCR Office trying to get their attention. The protest has began on the 29th of September and they have been sleeping in this make shift camp for the past three months trying to get the attention of the international community to find solutions to their problems, which included protection from the UNHCR and better treatment from the Egyptian government.
On December 29th, around 5,000 soldiers blocked the whole Mohandessin area. They first used water canons 3 times directed at 3,000 refugees on a freezing night and than they stormed in to the camp, where majority of the refugees were women and children. The refugees did not fight back at all, they were totally unarmed. The police had sticks in their hands and they began hitting everyone, including children and women. They forced the refugees into buses, carried them one by one, violently. The refugees including women and children were all covered with blood, many injured from the beating and kicking they received from the police. The refugees had little or no clothing on them, all wet from the water canons. Most did not even have their shoes on. They left all their belongings behind, everything they owned, including their suitcases and their documents, which were picked up by the Egyptian authorities and thrown away. There are 29 dead bodies still waiting in the morgue and their families are awaiting decisions from the UNHCR who promised to give $1,000 USD to each family who wants to bury their relatives in Sudan. The authorities distributed all refugees including women and children into seven different prisons and announced that they would deport half of them back to Sudan. With the pressure of the international community, the Egyptian government gave one week and allowed UNHCR to access three prisons and to determine who needs international protection. The UNHCR identified who were registered with them and those who had yellow or blue cards were released. All close-file cases remain in prison, which are around 450 refugees. Their faith is up to the Egyptian government, who may deport them back to Sudan. Mass deportation is against the international law and pressure must be made on the Egyptian government so that they do not deport any one back to Sudan. Some Sudanese refugees are missing. There are about 300 who were at the camp site on the 29th of December and taken to prisons, however, no one has heard from them and they are not on the prison list that UNHCR has. A through investigation must be carried out to find out what happened to them. A through investigation must be carried out and the Egyptian government must be punished for massacring innocent refugees, which includes children and two babies who are less than 1 years old, and for imprisoning men, women and children for up to two weeks who has not committed any crimes.
The situation of the Sudanese refugees became even worst after this incident. No Sudanese refugee is immune from being stopped on the street and being imprisoned. They have no protection and no security. The Sudanese refugees are scared to go out and stay in their homes. One of the major problems the Sudanese refugees face in Egypt is the discrimination they face both from the Egyptian government and the public. They are being harassed, and humiliated daily by the Egyptians.
