A group of 13 physicians and allied health staff from the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, endeavored on a missionary trip, sponsored by the Crudem Group out St. Louis Mo. to provide Cardiac surgery and care for a limited number of Haitian people.
We traveled to the city of Milot, where we worked in the Sacred Heart Hospital. We arrived in early February 2005 for 1 week. We spent out first day doing Echo cardiology to determine which patients would be surgical candidates. We chose 5 Haitians. 4 women and 1 male. We operated on them during the following week. We trained the Haitian staff to help with the recovery of our patients.
The Haitian people are wonderful people. Their country is beautiful. Located in the Caribbean, it has a tropical climate. Haiti is very poor, but they are very proud people with wonderful history. Haiti was ruled in the early 1800's by the French, but the French were overthrown by a great slave revolt.
What we do for the Haitian people is minute, but 5 people have a fresh start for a full life they would not have otherwise had. Haiti has many needs and problems, but they are a willing people, and with little help from the outside they can do wonderful things. It was a wonderful experience for me, and I am looking forward to going again in 2006.
