London–Former International Criminal Court chief prosecutor Luis Ocampo together with his wife Lucia Ocampo have been arrested over allegations of taking bribes from high profile Africans.

Addressing the media hours after his arrest, ICC registrar Mr. Herman von Hebel told our reporters that the court is set to try the suspects on Thursday afternoon after a month of gathering evidence.

“It took this court almost a month to gather enough evidence to prosecute Mr.Ocampo and his wife.” he said.

According to Herman, Ocampo is accused of making ‘lots of money’ by advising people, who risk being accused of war crimes, and by owning firms in offshore tax havens.

“The prosecutor must be a person ‘of high moral character.’ The court will determine whether Ocampo and his wife used their offshore firms to receive bribes from people like Gaddafi and Kenyatta of Kenya.” He added.

While in ICC, Ocampos three key targets for the prosecution were Ugandan guerrilla leader Joseph Kony, Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir, both for genocide, Libya’s Muammar Gaddafi and Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto for crimes against humanity.

Accusations

On Aug. 15, 2012, two months after leaving his job as chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court (ICC), $50,000 was transferred to Argentinian lawyer Luis Moreno Ocampo’s account at the Dutch bank ABN Amro. The money was wired from an account in Switzerland, and sent to Europe by the Tain Bay Corporation, a firm based around 9,000 kilometers (5,500 miles) southwest of there — in Panama.

More cash flowed in the months that followed. At least $140,000 was transferred to the account in the Netherlands in several tranches — always from Panama, and always via Switzerland.

According to the commercial register of Panama, a company named Furman Management acted as president of Tain Bay. But documents obtained by the French investigative site Mediapart and analyzed by DER SPIEGEL and journalists with the European Investigative Collaboration (EIC) network reveal who was truly behind the Tain Bay Corporation in Panama: Ocampo himself and his wife.

They are going to remain behind bars until tomorrow, Thursday afternoon.

Luis Gabriel Moreno Ocampo is an Argentine lawyer and the first Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC). He left the court having served his non-renewable term of nine years in 2012 and was succeeded by his former deputy, Ms Bensouda.
