No meeting with Obama for Ahmed Mohamed, clockmaker, during White House visit to boost tolerance and technology

WASHINGTON–Ahmed Mohamed wants to design the first generators used during a manned mission to Mars. But first, he’s going to the second White House Astronomy Night on Monday, where he’ll meet NASA scientists and astronauts.
Ahmed, 14, was arrested on Sept. 14 after bringing a clock he reassembled inside a pencil case to MacArthur High School. Irving police called the clock “a hoax bomb,” and didn’t file charges.
But his story set off an international frenzy, and President Barack Obama invited Ahmed to bring his “cool clock” to White House soon after.
I felt really happy that I got support from the president,” said Ahmed in an interview Monday morning. “It’s really amazing that he helped me.”
At the White House, press secretary Josh Earnest said the president won’t meet with Ahmed but is happy to have him join hundreds of guests at the event. Earnest rejected assertions from Sen. Ted Cruz, among others, that the invitation shows more respect than the president shows for police, who face dangers every day protecting the public.
“I don’t believe the president will have an opportunity to meet one-on-one with Ahmed Mohamed. After all there are several hundred people who are planning to participate” including educators, scientists, parents, students, astronauts and others, he said.
Cruz said Sunday in Plano that the invitation to Ahmed was divisive, and a slap to police whom, he said, the president ignores.
Earnest responded that “the president in a variety of settings has made clear the amount of respect that he has for our men and women in uniform who every day walk outside the door of their home and put their lives on the line to protect and serve the communities in which they work. That is an honorable profession.”
Earnest said he wasn’t sure if Ahmed was asked not to bring his clock but added there were no security concerns. Ahmed, he said, would go through the same screening as anyone else entering the executive complex.
“I’m confident that Ahmed, like everyone else who attends Astronomy Night, will go through the security measures and screening measures that are necessary to ensure the safety of the president, the White House and everybody else who’s participating in Astronomy Night,” Earnest said.
Ahmed said he won’t bring his clock because he’s been too busy traveling to pick it up from home. He met Wednesday in Sudan’s capital with the president of that country. He said he is eager to see stars up-close for the first time and meet other students who are passionate about science.
The White House visit is the highlight of busy trip to Washington. Ahmed spent Saturday night at a Council on American-Islamic Relations gala, and will tour labs at the National Institute of Standards and Technology on Monday afternoon.
Obama will speak at the event. Ahmed was hoping to talk with the first family about his difficulties growing up the United States. Ahmed was born in Sudan and said he relates to Obama’s own unconventional childhood, though the president was born in the U.S.
“I’m going to tell them my message about how hard it is growing up in America, because I came to America when I was really young,” said Ahmed. “But on the way, you do make friends and they help you along the journey. You meet people that are just like you, from where you come from, or completely different places.”
Ahmed talked about a friend from home he meet during the state finals of underwater robotics competition. They create generators and roller-skate every weekend, but run into a few obstacles along the way, like when they tried to make a skateboard brake.
“He crashed into the side of a wall,” said Ahmed of his friend. “The lever–it jammed so the brake didn’t go through.”
Despite high praise from the president, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and some giants in technology, Ahmed’s arrest set off a slew of conspiracy theories about his clock and intentions.
“I was positive before any of this happened, and I’ll keep staying positive,” said Ahmed. He said he wants to use his new fame to encourage kids to get into science and judge others by “their heart,” not race or religion.
So what can people expect from Ahmed’s heart؟
“They’re going to see a lot of things.” he said. “They’re going to see happiness.”
