In "On China", former secretary of state Henry Kissinger admitted, in a way closer to regret than to admission, that the United States had committed grave mistake when (we) thought that China will continue to be the same poor, populous and cheap labor third world country, so the United States rushed immediately after the Open-Up and showered Chinese businesses with billions of investment Dollars, US corporations moved all high-tech, low-tech and no tech, technology and jobs to China. That short-sighted policy worked for a little more than a decade, until the Asian titan started to wake-up and stand on its own feet, but then it was too late for the US factories already established in China to back-up.. One thing that the United States has failed to predict at that time was the rapid economic development with world highest growth rate that approached mid two-figure in the beginning of the first decade of the current century. Thanks to American and western technology and money. In the year 2007, China was the world's #4 biggest economy.. but today China is the world's second biggest economy after taking Germany and then Japan in a matter of a few years.. Second only to the United States. If the United States and China maintained the same growth rate, then China is projected to take over the USA in about 10 to 15 years. China has already passed the United States and became the biggest car market in the world, also the World Monitory Fund (WMF) has declared the China took of the United States place as the world's largest market in purchasing power. God only knows in what other fields China already took the United States. It is known that Chinese people tend to keep low profile and they don't mind if labeled as third world country.
Since long time, the west has been arguing China to open up and adapt the free market principles.. but when China opened up, and adapted free market, the Adam Smith style, now, and ironically, we see the west shouting at China to.... wait!. European countries even went to WTO and complained against China selling too much goods to them!! with down to earth prices, putting China on the defense for free market and open competition principles!
The west has no right to argue that they have developed those principles and modernized them and changed terms like "free market" and "open competition", to fair competition. with government regulations and intervention!! What was China doing anyway before the open-up? and what was the west kept arguing China to do for decades? But the most important question is: Why now? Why the west followed Adam Smith's economy and free market principles so religiously for more than a century, forcing third world countries to adapt it, in an unfair and merciless competition, in which the loser has always been third world countries, and then after building itself, and leaving third world countries in the fold of poverty for centuries, and after they felt that the environment has changed and those (developing) countries have started really developing! now the west wants to change the rules in the middle of the game.
Unlike western countries, and here we focus on the United States, China has central planning for trade and economy nationwide.. no single industry of considerable importance can adapt international trade policy without the approval of the central government. WTO accepted China as a full member while knowing these facts, so the argument that Chinese government is supporting exporting companies by subsidizing them and giving them customs and tax breaks, reflects a great deal of lack of knowledge about the inner workings of the Chinese system.
On the currency manipulation issue, the majority of Chinese people are still poor, only south-east China has so far developed.. all land-locked provinces with no direct access to sea ports are still under-developed. However, central government in Beijing has plans in place to move inlands and invest in the development of these provinces in a calculated and balanced steps. In 2011 central government directed rich and more developed provinces in the south-east of the country to invest in projects in Xingjian province, and assigned regions of the province to each one of the more rich provinces to invest in.
This highlights how the Chinese economy is planned and administered.. just imagine if president Obama orders California to invest in Alabama! this is China and this is how Chinese economy and business are managed.. regardless of the open-up, China free market and all policies in practice, Chinese government still maintain control of all aspects of the economy, commerce and international trade. therefore, when it regulates currency values or custom duties it is acting within its authority and not (interfering in the market).. China free market model is different from that in the west.
