تعرف يا طلعت أدورنو ومدرسة فرانكفورت بجيليها يستحقان الاعتناء لسببين، أولهما المبدئية التي رافقت مسيرتهم الفلسفية برفضهم الانصياع للعسف النازي والإندغام في مشاريع السلطة النازية
ثانيهما لأفكارهم الجليلة الناقدة للمرتكزات الفكرية التي قامت عليها الحداثة والقمع الغربي للشعوب الفقيرة كوليد شرعي للأيدلوجية الحداثية المنفلته .
أتمني أن نتناول قريباً رموز هذه المدرسة وجواراتهم مع الوضعيين المنطقيين والوجوديين
من جهة أخرى لأدورنو كتاب ممتاز عن صناعة الثقافة كما أن له مقال مميز عن الموسيقي الشعبية، أو موسيقي البوب كنت أحاول منذ فترة كتابة مقال عنه ولكن رغم الجهد الذي بذلته في المقال إلا انني رميته ضمن مهملاتي قناعة بأنه لا يرقي للنشر في الدوريات الغربية ولكن ما دام جات الفرصة فدعني أعرضه هنا وأترجمه في الغد إلي العربية
Adorno’s essay “On Popular Music” originally published in Studies in Philosophy and Social Science. It encountered a great deal of conflicting responses, because it touches areas loaded with the ideology intermingling with the aesthetic. The aim of my essay is to introduce some significant thoughts of Theodor W. Adorrno on music. My focus will be on Adorno’s critique of popular music. I will discuss Adorno’s criticism of popular music within his broad project of critique of modernity He presents an apparent distinction between popular and serious music, a distinction between what he calls the standardization and the uniqueness in music. Theodor W. Adorno has been a prominent figure in the history of social sciences, philosophy, and music industry in Germany. He endeavors to structure a harmony between sociology of art and aesthetics by theorizing a relation between natural beauty and artistic beauty, thereby subordinating natural beauty to artificial beauty and overriding the unilateral position of both Kant and Hegel. Adorno remains the most prominent figure to have written on musical sociology, providing a strong argument on his essay on popular music that opens the door wide for additional studies and enrichment on realms of music and natural versus artificial beauty.
Summing up his argument on popular music, Adorno said, "Popular music, which produces the stimuli we are here investigating, is characterized by its difference from serious music. He goes on and says, "A clear judgment concerning the relation of serious music to popular music can be arrived at only by strict attention to the fundamental characteristics of popular music: standardization”. Adorno hereby bases his argument on the concept of standardization. He considers the standardization that exhibited in the form of popular music its major problem.
Adorno viewed pop music as a music that has a wide appeal to people, and this gave it a significance of standardizing the taste of people. Standardization makes the focus in popular music is on refinement of the parts, rather than on renovation of the whole. This produces a style of listening that revokes individuality. Standardization in music enforces an imitation pattern that reflects on the continuous repetition of the form; broadcasting, selection, and marketing. According to Adorno, pop music exhibits all rules that formulate the standardization in its form. The standardization is inclusive of "structure of chorus to the harmonic progression, melodic range, all sorts of hits: mother songs, nursery rhymes, dance-type songs,". To emphasize his arguments, he notes that choruses are made of 32 bars with one octave and one note. This aspect brings out pop music as lacking both uniqueness and originality. He also takes note of the fact that the harmonic cornerstones of every beat are also standardized and tend to beat out from the same scheme.
Adorno questions the rationale behind the contrast between the standardization of detail and that of the framework. He states that this imparts a rough and preliminary effect upon the listener which makes him/her to harbor stronger reactions to some parts of the music than others. Pop listeners therefore lack the satisfaction of living through the whole experience and miss a lot of detail. Adorno contrasts pop music with serious music by drawing many parallels in the two set of genres. To begin with, serious music is characterized. This means that there is a relationship of every detail in the piece and is not pegged on a musical scheme. To clarify on this, he cites the works of Beethoven, particularly the seventh symphony and Appasionato. These two compositions show that “every detail derives its musical sense from the concrete totality of the piece that, in turn, consists of the life relationship of the details and never of a mere enforcement of a musical scheme”.
In the same respect, he claimed that all popular music is the same regardless of the artist or lyrics. This is because of its standardized state. Consequently, popular music demands predictable reaction from its audience. The reaction to all songs of a particular genre is the same. Adorno argued that this factor contributed to its popularity. The majority of the listeners already know what to expect, hence they automatically love the song.. Popular music promoters are aware of this and hence have centered on it. A taxi driver told me that “most of the taxi-drivers always play the top-40 radio stations, because they know that what their customers like”. They are expected to show interest to which they have become accustomed.
Popular music’s lyrics call for the emotions of the listeners and their desires. This gives the listener the feel of what they should intend for or have. Adorno argued that this feature was not across all songs, “their response to music immediately expresses their desire to obey” He classifies jazz and pop in the same genre and distinguishes them from serious music. This is informed by the fact that in jazz, just like pop, the listener is able to substitute the complex harmonies with simpler ones. Adorno argues that the jazz musician lives in a hostile but compliant submission to the system(the culture industry) that promotes the music. It is clear that Adorno attempts to gather all modern music together in one pile as a product of culture industry, while exempting serious music of such influence. He added that some harmonies are much more easily understood in their simplistic pop and jazz version than in more advanced serious music. Actually, the status of jazz in the culture industry is more complicated that in many situations jazz preserves its status as a music for the sake of music only, or for struggle against injustice as it has always been one of the major musical records of the African-American struggle toward freedom in America. Examples of jazz songs during the struggle for freedom include songs like Fables of Faubus by Charles Mingus, Music Is My Sanctuary by Gary Bartz, and Lift Every Voice and Sing by Art Blakey.
According to Adorno, listening to popular music made the listener aware of the limitations and unfulfilled aims of their lives. This caused an individual to be unsatisfied with his or her life, hence looked to pop music as a way out of his or her life. The individual felt the need to aim for the life portrayed in the song. This was by stating that, “sentimental music lies rather in the temporary release given to the awareness that one has missed fulfillment”. For Adorno, the difference between the two forms of music is not limited to the intricacy from one side and publicity on the other. He defines serious music as an art. It is an art superior to popular music. Serious music also has an element of uniqueness. In serious music, when a note or a tone is misplaced, the song changes entirely. However, in popular music, positioning is not important and complexity has no consequences.
Adorno holds firmly his beliefs about music and he ignored the consistent change in music between 1956 and 1969. The emergence of different music genres and groups over that period was quite significant. There was no similarity between rock n' Roll from 1956, the Beatles from 1962, and the counter-culture music from 1965. Sales, figures and experts stand to differ with Adorno's opinion that popular music listeners are passive. John Storey said that the cultural industry is not the one that manipulates its listeners, but rather, it struggles to satisfy the growing discrimination in their taste of music. In addition, Storey disagrees with Adorno's classification of music. What Adorno called popular music, is taken as serious music in some cultures. Walter Benjamin agrees with Storey by saying that music is not only classified by the mode of production but also by the way it is consumed. Benjamin indicated that the meaning of popular music separates away from its authentic roots to be valued only as a product for consumption. The technological reproduction of culture confronts the authenticity, the distance, and the authority of its text in order to open it to the multiplicity of explications, so the meaning is not limited merely to production but to the consumption too. Therefore, Adorno's interpretation could be concluded as biased when limits its approach to one side of the production/consumption process.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, it is evident that music has a wide array of genres and harmonics. These different types of genres transcend different cultures, age groups, social classes and even gender. In my opinion, therefore, it would be in bad taste to term one genre as superior while dismissing another as armature. Though the complexities involved in different music differ, as correctly brought out by Adorno, one can’t accurately label any music as being better. That is purely a matter of personal opinion and preference. Adorno’s criticism is not an incitement for anyone to avoid any category of music. However, he advocates for a conscious approach that is able to resist conditioning by the generalized power of media culture that determines the public taste.
Adornos rigid stand on pop music can be disputed as many other scholars and music enthusiasts have come out to disapprove his assumptions. John Storey and Benjamin William offer a different perspective of the popular type of music that deeply contradicts with what Adorno postulated. It is clear that Adorno’s views are bias towards his so-called ‘serious’ music, he sees the need to seek its appraisal through vilifying popular music.
