Message from Yasir Arman for the Act for Sudan Emergency Action Summit
Dear Eric Cohen, Greg Stanton and Members of the Organizing Committee,
Let me express our gratitude and deep appreciation for the continuous efforts by you and Act for Sudan and for being on the front lines of solidarity with the Sudanese people. What a great human effort you are doing.
I regret missing the chance to meet activists and prominent leaders who are joining your effort from different forums. I’m looking forward to meeting all of them with my colleagues in the heart of Sudan at the time of peace and democracy and equal citizenship in the streets of our capital, Khartoum, and in other beautiful places of our land, the Sudan, an ancient land that’s history goes back seven to eight thousand years. The peoples and lands contributed effectively to human civilization before and our people are eager again to contribute positively to the well being of humanity in the future.
Let me on my own behalf and on behalf of the SPLM-N, which is being represented by Comrade Philip Tutu, and on behalf of the SRF, which is also being represented at this esteemed conference, to raise the following concerns and issues. Looking forward, this conference will indeed add value in the effort by Sudanese people and the international solidarity movement worldwide with the people of Sudan.
It is worth mentioning that the SPLM-N vision is based on the need of a new social political and cultural dispensation for the future Sudan that is based on democracy, social justice, gender equality, and equal constitutional rights. That is what we describe as the New Sudan. We and our people paid immense sacrifices to realize this vision and we will continue in the same direction until the New Sudan is achieved. We believe it is the only solution for Sudan and it is the only game in town. The status quo is untenable and we are not looking to replace victims with other victims. We are looking towards a new society that is based on justice, equality and democracy and that will bring a national consensus and will unite our people and open the doors and windows for a new common future. We cannot correct the past but we should look for a new bright future.
Since the National Congress took power around 23 years ago, there was significant solidarity by the international solidarity movement with the Sudanese people, but as of today, despite the success and the achievements, some issues and questions still remain and they deserve an answer, especially from this gathering.
Why is the international community supporting the piecemeal solution? How do we effectively gear the solution towards a comprehensive holistic approach that will bring democracy, peace and stability on one ticket? Ironically, the National Congress and the international community are in the same saddle looking for a piecemeal solution. What an irony. Though the language is different, the results are the same. Why does the international community invite Bashir and his colleagues and they still deal with his government and deny access to the representatives of the victims that are represented by the SRF and other political and civil society forces? Again, why do they talk a lot about genocide and their eyes are closed when it comes to Sudan? Though they are the same people who indicted the leaders of the regime and yet they let them continue practicing more on the Sudanese people. What is the rationale behind that? The regime in Khartoum, they fought all the regions of Sudan – you can name them – and they marginalized the majority of the Sudanese people, and still why do we look for partial solutions in El Fasher, Damazien, Port Sudan or Kadugli? It is Khartoum that is fighting everybody and the only solution is to change policies in Khartoum – not elsewhere. Why do they indict the leaders of the regime and they are calling for a donor’s conference in Doha to support the same regime without ending the war and genocide in Darfur? Despite UN Security Council Resolution 2046, General Bashir is continuing denying access for humanitarian assistance to the civilian populations and continues to bombard them from air and ground in front of the eyes and ears of the international community. The only answer from the authors of the Resolution 2046 for more than 20 months is silence and business as usual. What new approach do we need to adopt at this conference to change these policies and attitudes by the international community? We are looking forward to this conference to add value in answering these important questions.
In answering these important questions, the SPLM-N together with our allies have started an important process to affect change in Sudan and we have already achieved a lot. We have built the SRF, which is a strong effective political forum that we are intending to develop as an electable historical mass that will compete and change Sudan and win the vote of our people democratically in the future Sudan. Again, we have reached out to different opposition forums represented by political parties, civil societies, and youth and women social movements that resulted in the New Dawn Charter, which will continue to develop, and in this regard, we are looking for your strong support for this essential process for the transformation of Sudan.
Again, I would like to note that when it comes with the relations of the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan and the peoples of the two Sudans , we believe that we share a common history, destiny, heritage and interests, and there is a need to build two viable democratic states, and the SPLM-N is an asset when it comes to cementing relations between the two Sudans. We are looking forward for a united Sudan between two independent countries and furthermore, we are looking for the unity of the African continent and peace and stability and respect of human rights worldwide.
It will be upon us to exploit the opportunity of this conference on how we can deepen the international solidarity movement with the Sudanese people and to establish a link between all actors all over the world and between the Sudanese and non-Sudanese for this movement to achieve its goals and for the transformation and change to take place in Sudan.
Finally, I wish this conference a great success that it deserves and as I am writing this message, in my mind and before my eyes, many beautiful faces of Americans and others from all over the world are coming in front of me, but I would like to give special salute to Professor Eric Reeves, who against all odds, continues to raise the banner of solidarity day and night with the people of Sudan and who never gives up the fight. This salute goes to all of you as Professor Reeves is one of our symbols of solidarity.
