PMO Manger Kenana Engineering and Technical Services, Ltd. April 2004– October 2007 (3 years 7 months)Khartoum Sudan
In 2003, the company was restructured to cope with the expansion of the company's business. As a result the Project Management Office (PMO) was established as an organizational unit to manage the various projects. Since the company is a project-based company, the PMO is considered the heart of the company. I was assigned the responsibility of heading this new division. Applying the accumulated experience in business and project management, I managed to establish the division to manage the company's projects which value to more than 1.6 billion USD. The activities included:
ü Building the Project Management processes and systems using the state of the art and accumulated knowledge within the profession of project management. The systems and processes were based on the well known Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and PRINCE 2. The impact of these systems was clearly reflected in
controlling the cost and duration of projects.
ü Staffing the various projects. When the PMO was established, the total staff did not exceed 6 professionals. I established a strong system to acquire high calibre to execute the projects. Currently, I do manage a division with more than 70 engineers and professionals stationed in Sudan and other countries like Nigeria.
ü Designing partnerships with sound engineering firms in Sudan and abroad. As part of my policy in executing our projects is to team and enter into partnerships with recognized firms in Sudan as well as international engineering firms in areas which Sudan lacks. This strategy was followed in order to continuously improve the quality of service of the company and to develop the personal skills of the company personnel by interacting with international firms. Currently, the PMO is in partnership with three local firms and three international firms.
Knowledge Manager Kenana Engineering and Technical Services, Ltd. 2001– 2004 (3 years)Khartoum, Sudan
Immediately after returning from the USA, I joined KETS and was appointed as the Head of the Knowledge Department. Being an engineering firm, knowledge forms the core competence of the company. Thus, utilizing the state of the art processes, systems and tools to develop the personnel knowledge, was a real challenge, specially, for a newly established company. With my exposure to many of the modern techniques in engineering and project management services, I started to establish the organizational and business processes which would optimize the utilization of resources, increase the staff knowledge, ensure dissemination of information, provide customer satisfaction, and minimize cost. This was achieved through the following steps, which I introduced to the company:
1. Computerizing the various processes by introducing control software (MS Project), the concept of shared knowledge via local intranet, internet access for the customers, AQ/QC and excellence, and building engineering database.
2. Introducing the PMO concept to centralize the project delivery processes, operate as a support function in providing training; software; standardize policies, and to directly manage the company's projects. This resulted in restructuring the company to suit this model.
3. Establishing a clear career path for project managers, by setting training programs, support for international certifications, and mentoring junior staff.
