Quote: The Sudanese Ambassador to Uganda, H. E. Hussein Awadi Ali could be in serious trouble after allegations that he assaulted the embassy’s long time serving chauffer. Ssebaggala Mande Ismail is accusing Awadi of having terribly slapped him on his left eye on May 21, at his residence in Kololo, a posh Kampala suburb. Ssebaggala who has been the Ambassador’s driver since 2009 claims he was beaten in the morning after taking his boss’ kids to Rainbow International school. “When I returned home the maid sent me to buy 1 litre each of Fanta and Sprite soda, a kilo of maganjo millet flour and Russian butter for H.E,” a sombre Ssebaggala said. “When Awadi received the items, he reacted very harshly, giving me a very heavy slap on the cheek causing my left eye to swell instantly. He retorted that he has never allowed Fanta in his home because it’s poisonous asking me to take it back. Instead I left the soda which I had bought from Checkers supermarket at the check point at the residence. That day I never worked. He was driven by my colleague Waswa,” he narrated. Not only was Ssebaggala slapped, but his employment contract was terminated unlawfully yet he has served the embassy since 2006. The contract states that an employee whose term of service is not less than one year of service shall be entitled to an end of service remuneration equal to a 15 days salary for the first five years of service or 30 days of payment for each year. It also provides that an employee should be informed 30 days before termination of his contract. However, none of the above was met in his case. Ssebaggala filed an assault case at Kiira Road Police Station, REF: 44/21/05/2012 where he was given Form 3 to go for treatment and later preceded to the foreign affairs ministry to the chief of protocol’s office where he was only managed to see the secretary. He has been told to wait for the chief of protocol but in vain till he went with his lawyer and they were both bounced on grounds that the lawyer was not necessary since his is a diplomatic case. In fact he was even told finally that the ambassador has got no case to answer. He incurred medical expenses while treating his eye, but he has never been compensated by the embassy to date. Ssebaggala describes his former boss as a very cruel man who has brutalised a number of his employees and other people in his neighbourhood on several occasions. He said that it bothers him so much seeing him sit on his pending payments yet he is a married man with kids in school. Ssebaggala says he wants the government to intervene after he was sent away penniless having diligently worked for the embassy for seven years.
