Quote: ESSAY ON:WOMEN CHANGE THE WORLD History tells us that the women of the past were greatly discriminated against the girls were not allowed to go to schools even in the communities that taught boys to read and write, instead they were forced to stay at home and do all the household work and eventually grow up to be illiterate women. Today, most schools are open for both boys and girls and women have almost equal rights. In some places,(mostly the under-development countries) women are still expected to be nothing other than housewives and the girls are still struggling to go to schools. But whatever change that has happened, hasn’t just with the passing of time, instead it has happened as a result of the hard work of women across the globe. As the saying ”never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world“, generations of women came together to affect these changes in the most democratic ways. They worked very deliberately to make a better world and they have succeeded hugely. They had campaigns to fight discrimination, they raised the awareness of the public on women’s rights issues, they also went on processions when violations against women took place and as I said they have succeeded hugely, because it was only after this movement that women got their rights to vote and not only that but also got the right to be elected to the public. Jeanette Rankin was the first lady to be elected to the public. Three generations later women were still less than 3% of our congressional representatives .Today women hold up to 11% of seats in the congress and 21% of the state legislative seats. In the world of work, women have entered the trades and the businesses of all kind. Also, about a week ago, 3 women won the peace prize of the year 2011 for their hard work on women rights. This shows that women have not yet stopped fighting for their rights and they never will if it’s not given to them. Women and girls today are living the legacy that generations of women before us have given their best to achieve. These women have accomplished so much yet a lot still remains to be done. Alice Paul the organizer who first wrote out the equal rights amendment once said I always feel the movement is sort of a mosaic, each one of us adds one little stone to the grand mosaic and you get a great mosaic at the end. Women working together adding their small stones to the grand mosaic have increased our rights against all odds. Hence we have a lot to be proud of in this heroic legacy. So I’d like to advice every little girl of today to work hard and hopefully be one of the leading women of tomorrow. Thank you for your time and hope you enjoyed!
