Commission on Human Rights 60th Session Geneva, 19.04.2004
Appeal for Urgent Action
Stop the Concentration Camps in Darfur (Western Sudan)
In follow up of its Press Release of 13th April 2004 on the growing phenomenon of concentration camps in the Darfur region of Western Sudan, the ASICL received further information that at least 20,000 (twenty thousands) internally displaced persons are currently facing imminent danger of extermination in two camps located near Nyala, Capital of Southern Darfur State. As in other similar camps all over the Darfur region, these people were mainly women, children and the elderly belonging to the Fur, Massaleet, Zaghawa and other indigenous African tribes of the Darfur region. They are incarcerated in hedge camps controlled by the government-supported militiamen well known as the Janjaweed under the direct supervision of the Governor of Southern Darfur State General Adam Hamid Musa. These unfortunate human beings currently live in appalling conditions without access to shelter, food, clean water, medicine and sanitation. The death rate among them is at an alarming rate. Below are details of the two concentration camps:
1. Al-Intifada Camp, (Located at about 8 km, South Nyala), (about 9,000, prisoners). 2. Belail Camp, (Located at about 25 km, East Nyala), (about 11,000, prisoners)
We call on the international community to undertake immediate steps to investigate the situation of these persons with a view to save their endangered lives and bring those responsible for the crimes committed against them to justice.
