    Bringing a speaker to your campus or community helps make the genocide occuring far away in Sudan much closer to home. Available speakers include survivors of the Sudan genocide - including escaped slaves and survivors of militia raids in Darfur - as well as leading civil rights and human rights activists.

    More than 50 people attended the National Student Vigil for Darfur Thursday night in front of the Duke Chapel.
    Mohamed Yahya
    A refugee from the Darfur region of Sudan, Mohamed is the leader of the Massaleit Community in Exile. In the early 1990s, Mohamed’s village was attacked by the Sudanese government-backed Arab militia, known as Janjaweed. The raiders decimated his village, and Mohamed's relatives and neighbors were shot, raped, and burnt alive. Today Mohamed works with other refugees and speaks out against the genocide in Sudan. Mohamed has spoken at Duke, George Washington University, and alongside Gloria Steinem at a rally in front of the UN.


    Francis Bok
    A native of southern Sudan, Francis was abducted into slavery at the age of 7, and he remained in bondage for ten years. (See a Flash presentation of his life story.) Now, he lives in Boston and works with the American Anti-Slavery Group to spread awareness about modern day slavery through his stirring speeches and autobiography, Escape from Slavery. Francis has spoken at dozens of universities and community centers, testified to the Senate, carried the Olympic torch, and met with the President at the White House.



    Abuk Bak
    Abuk is a native of southern Sudan who for ten years endured a brutal life as a slave. She now lives in Boston and is dedicated to raising awareness of worldwide slavery by sharing her harrowing experience. Abuk has appeared on PBS, been featured in Ladies Home Journal, and spoken at numerous universities throughout the country, including Tufts University (where she had a dramatic confrontation with Sudan's Ambassador to the US).



    Simon Deng
    Abducted into slavery at the age of nine, Simon lived as a slave for two years in the north of Sudan before making his escape. Now living in New York, he is a powerful speaker with a strong message, inspiring activists wherever he goes. He recounts government raids on his village, including watching friends shot before his eyes and discovering elders burned alive in their homes. Simon was recently profiled in the Christian Science Monitor and has spoken to student activists at Harvard, Columbia, and Yale. As one student remarked about Deng's recent presentation at NYU, "You could hear a pin drop in the room, it was so quiet. Everyone gave him the attention that he deserved."



    Rev. Walter Fauntroy
    Rev. Fauntroy serves as honorary chairman of the Sudan Campaign. He is a former associate of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and helped organize the 1963 civil rights March on Washington. A former congressman, Fauntroy is founder of the Congressional Black Caucus. Fauntroy has twice traveled to Sudan, helped rescue thousands of Sudanese slaves, and been arrested for protesting outside the Sudanese Embassy. A charismatic speaker who has spoken about Sudan on campuses across the US, Fauntroy offers the perspective of a veteran civil rights activist on confronting atrocities today in Sudan.



    Joe Madison
    Joe is the president of the Sudan Campaign, a former board member of the NAACP, and a host on the Radio One Talk Network. Madison has traveled to Sudan on several occasions and helped liberate thousands of Sudanese slaves. He has been arrested protesting outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington, and received a high-profile legal defense from both Ken Starr and Johnnie Cochran. In 2004, he launched a hunger-strike demanding the US government recognize the Sudan crisis as a genocide. Madison is an inspiring activist who offers an eyewitness account of the Sudan genocide.



    Charles Jacobs
    Co-founder and president of the American Anti-Slavery Group, Charles has a very long record of activism and advocacy on human rights issues. An expert on international slavery, Charles is now one of the top personalities in the new abolitionist movement. He has helped rescue thousands of slaves in Sudan and worked for a decade to mobilize the human rights community to tackle slavery and genocide in Sudan. Charles offers the perspective of a veteran activist on Sudan, and explains both why the world has failed so far to stop the Sudan genocide and what we must do now to save millions of lives



    Jesse Sage
    As the Associate Director of the American Anti-Slavery Group and the founder of iAbolish.com, Jesse has been a driving force in raising public awareness of slavery around the world. He has worked with Sudanese and other Middle Eastern human rights activists for the past six years, and offers the perspective of a young activist. He has spoken at Harvard, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Columbia, and many other campuses. Jesse's message to audiences is to appreciate the power of our freedom and the responsibility we have to help people silenced in slavery.



    Jay Williams
    An ardent abolitionist, Jay was a freshman at Harvard University when he first learned about modern day slavery. As a student intern with the American Anti-Slavery Group, he twice travelled to Sudan and helped liberate over 10,000 slaves. Jay has been featured in Teen People magazine and spoken to audiences across the country, sharing the amazing stories of the survivors of slavery he met in Sudan.



    Gloria White-Hammond
    Gloria is a Boston pediatrician and minister who has repeatedly traveled to Sudan to assist survivors of slavery. She has helped liberate thousands of slaves and established a program to empower female survivors. She has seen firsthand the horrors of slavery and genocide in Sudan, and is a passionate activist and speaker
