On behalf of the family, friends, colleagues and neighbours of the late Abdel Salam Hassan I am writing to invite you to a commemorative day on to mark the first anniversary of his premature death. Abdel Salam, who was killed in his flat in circumstances still under investigation, was a leading human rights activist lawyer, a thinker and creative writer well known and respected across Sudan and many parts of Africa as well as in UK. During his rich but short life he spent extended periods as a political detainee in Sudan and helped in leading and establishing many organisations such Sudan Human Rights
Organisation, Sudan Organisation against Torture and worked for leading human rights bodies such a African Watch, Justice Africa and Redress in London. We come together in the scene of the horrendous crime on Abdel Salam's first anniversary to acknowledge his achievements and renew our commitment to the principles to which he devoted his life. We hope that the event, which will include an exhibition, will inspire a new generation of human rights activists in the Sudanese Community and beyond. We also hope it will be an uplifting and inspiring day about bravery, camaraderie and companionship. The event will be an open informal gathering where people can drop in at any time even for a few minutes to show their solidarity. The event will also be a good opportunity to exchange views on possible community spirited initiatives that can be developed in his memory. 6 Boone Street, London SE13 5SB Saturday the 12th of March 2011 Time: 3pm - 7pm Bus 436 , or British rail To Lewisham Centre station Lewisham Station, Take the Route Bus 273 from Stop: B, towards Petts Wood (4min) Manor Road Lee High Road Stop: L Walk to the home address (10min)
