Highlights on the Founder of Ahfad University for Women (AUW)
    The Late Professor Yousif Badri

On the occasion of the 15th memorial Day of the Founder of AUW, We, hereby highlight some outstanding aspects of this reputable veteran in the field of Non-governmental Education in the Sudan, the man who devoted his life to this tiresome task of developing and expanding the Ahfad Schools 1955 – 1965 to become Ahfad University College for Women 1966 that culminated in Ahfad University for Women.
Late Prof. Yousif Badri is the 12th son of his father. His brothers and sisters are twenty two (8 boys – 14 daughters from four mothers who all constitute the big Badri family. However, his small family consists of one wife, Sara Moussa Khalid, five daughters and one son.
Yousif Badri – one of the first Pharmacists - was by all means instrumental in the establishment of the first School of Assistant Pharmacists in the country. He resigned from the government and changed his carrier and joined his father in 1943. When his father died in 1954 Yousif assumed the leadership of Ahfad Schools. Under his leadership (1954 – 1995) Ahfad Secondary Schools expanded in buildings and number of students. He opened in 1955 the first non-government Girls Secondary School. By 1966, he devoted his energy to the establishment and promotion of Ahfad University College for Women until it received a fully recognized university status in 1995.
In 1970s, Yousif Badri earned a Blit degree from Oxford University and in 1981 the University of Khartoum conferred on him an honory doctoral degree and so did the University of Bristol (UK in 1985).
Yousif Badri was active by involving in the intellectual life of Sudan fund raising and presiding over a plenty of organizations as the Sudanese society for the advancement of science, Sudanese philosophic society etc.
He was an active member of the Boards of Trustees of many newly established non-governmental universities. He was the pioneer of non-governmental higher education in Sudan.
His initiatives included celebrations of various important occasions and events related to the university mission such as World Food Day with the aim of: raising the awareness of governments and communities of food shortage in many parts of the world; putting more emphasis on food production, and supporting regional and international cooperation efforts to overcome hunger, malnutrition and poverty.
This goes in line with celebrations of other occasions such as Education Day, the Women Day and Women's Week, the activities of which are geared towards woman main cause. They also focus attention on other related issues of peace, human rights protection, democracy that intersect with women's empowerment.
There are other significant contributions that vividly reflected Yousif Badris active involvement in the Sudanese society and pinpoint his humanistic character.
    Among those outstanding contributions are;
    • He was one of the founders of the Sudanese National Council for Researches and the chairman of its board in 1971.
    • He was the chairman of the Sudanese Philosophical Society for more than two decades (1956 – 1971).
    • He established the National Geographic Society (Man and the Hemisphere).
    • He took part on the World Conferences for Environment (Kenya – Denmark 1974 – 1975) that culminated in the establishment of the United Nations Environmental Program.
    • He also took part in a number of activities by World Societies and International Organizations; he also assisted in establishing World Friendship Societies that contributed in consolidating joint common understanding and world peace.
His interests also led him to actively participate in areas of human rights, such as combating slavery, human trafficking and preserving the rights of minority groups. Most significant in this field is his sponsoring of funds raising activities, donation campaigns to assist students and granting scholarships to them, especially those who come from the impoverished parts of the Sudan and from the War-stricken areas in Southern Sudan and Western Provinces (Darfur).
On the basis of the above mentioned, the image of Late Prof. Yousif Badri remains engraved in the memory and minds of the intellectuals Sudanese people and generations of students, graduates and staff of Ahfad University for Women

Translated Excerpts from Speech’s by some Members on the Occasion of Late Prof. Yousif Badri Eulogy, selected from the lamentations book “The Grief of Generation for their Beloved Dean” “Damat Al Geel Ala Ameedih Al Galil”

    Speech of Izz Aldin Alsayed
Chairman of the University Council of AUW:
“Yousif Badri was a man who does not admit of the “impossible” and is never defeated by challenges’ or crisis. He knows how to define his goals for which he lays sound basis one step after the other until his objectives are fully fulfilled. He is a man who has no sinister interests, a man who devotes his energy to the service of the people, to build up their carrier and leadership through education. He never hesitated to provide every possible help and assistance to them. Yousif Badri, does not only discord the term “impossible” from his mind, but despair never comes to his life.
He has a great sense of commitment, dedication and determination, a pioneer in the field of education, who left his imprints in every honorable and humanistic deed, a man of foresightedness and “clairvoyance”. He remains a well known and amiable figure to generations of the elite and the ordinary people for his kindness and love of humanity”.

    Speech of Bashir Al Bakri:
His home was a place of gathering for all the brothers who seek fraternity and amiability, who sit together not only to discuss Ahfad challenges but also the country’s home affairs. In fact, his home was like a parliament for the welfare of the whole community, it was also a home of the wise people, a forum for the elites. It was a home to envisage the future and a sanctuary for the aimless. You were always the man, the Dean of the Deans, for all the values of democracy, righteousness and fairness.
    Speech of Sadeg Al Mahadi:
Yousif Badri has followed a unique popular trend with keenness for change and continuous upgrading; taking the burden of the impoverished sectors both ethnically and socially. He is a reminder of the saying that civilization is measured by how to be kind enough to the poor.
It is through his creative and effective participation that the Sudanese woman occupied a prominent and outstanding position and became a model of change.
The Dean was a catalyst and driving force of the family which was liberated from the old fetters and transformed traditions by devoting itself for education, and renovations, a family that absorbed well the concepts of what is commitment, dedication, determination and hard experience. A person that came to being distinguished not by virtue of an inherited prestigious position but by a course of life characterized by modesty, humbleness dedication and steadfastness.
The Late Dean was after all the “torch” that rekindled and sponsored an intellectual movement seeking an out-let for the aimless who lost the sense of direction. He was a relentless fighter for the dignity and grandeur of the Sudanese people.
The Dean has passed away with all the love and respect of generations who adore him for his support and commitment to their cause of liberty through education.

    Speech of Tayeb Saleh:
All the good qualities and noble feelings known of him such as faithfulness, loyalty, wisdom together with humbleness form his main view and good faith that the good always prevails and that work and action are the mainstay of thought and ideas.

Speech of Saleh Abdul Rahman Yagoub “Businessman”:
“The sponsoring of Ahfad College for Women was in itself a demonstration of the Dean`s efforts in this domain. His achievement was a land mark in the field of Women Education. Yousif Badri was known for his deep knowledge and dedication. He was a shining star and a relentless fighter as reflected in his great efforts and active participation in cultural, educational and social conferences in domestic, regional and international arenas.
Prof. Yousif Badri was the mainstay and pioneer of popular non-governmental education in the Sudan”.

Speech of Nasr Aldeen Shulgami: “Ahfad Secondary School Graduate”
“He was a rare mixture of strength and flexibility, a stead fast and a stumbling block, he was actually a unique institution; he will remain deeply engraved in the minds of the elites and freedom fighters and human rights activists.
The man was a land mark in the progress of private education in the Sudan. Under him, Ahfad Schools expanded and developed to absorb hundreds of students which have ample room for the improvised students from all over Sudan. Yousif Badri considers Ahfad Schools not only a place for academic education, but a means to bridge gaps in the social process and he extends links with his students after graduation. After all what can we say more about this man whose authenticity is manifested in every aspect of his life. Yousif Badri is a man to be remembered by generations”.

Speech of Moussa Yagoub: “Ahfad Secondary School Graduates”
“The man has his own clear vision, looking at things from the perspective of education away from politics. Though his preoccupation was education, this did not prevent him from serving in other areas. He was always present in words and deeds and his efforts were felt all over the country; especially during the last years that witnessed the “Higher Education Revolution”. It suffices to mention that the last graduation ceremony (May 1995) was a great wedding celebration the hero of which was the dean Yousif Badri who outperformed all others in the state and the community as well. The ceremony was curried by the media in such a dramatic manner same as his memorial day. Yousif Badri was one of the few people who perpetuated his mission unprecedentedly.
Our pride is that the work of the great men does not pass with them because it is an open book that we will never miss”.

    Speech of Balghis Badri
“Our only means and source of pride in perpetuating the memory of the Dean is to be able to fulfill his aims and continue his mission mentioned in his famous book “The Fate of a generation”. Prof. Yousif Badri said “It is not strange to start one`s C.V from the middle of his life because it is a continuation of my father`s life of which I am proud. Ahfad Represents to me the family and country that gives meaning to my life. Ahfad is uniquely a story of success as it narrates the struggle not only of a man, but also of a whole nation, aspirations. It is a spirit that prevails over Sudan in terms of people and state”.
We will continue to remember him as a symbol of deep knowledge, thought, determination and struggle, for the sake of welfare and openness to the outside world.
