I found this article in the Khartoum Monitor site. It is written by Alfred Taban, a journalist who has earn the respect of everyone, especially his enemies. I think it is a call for every notherner to render justice to our southerner counter part....so let's hurry before it is too late.
What Self-determination means to Southern Sudanese

There have been so much misinterpretations, half-truths and no truths in discussions about self-determination for Southern Sudan that the central theme behind the call for this noble democratic dispensation has been lost completely.
Self-determination is not the creation of Southern Sudan, it came as a basic realization that peoples lumped together by force will never stay in peace. It is the realization that man is born free and he or she would like to live freely. It is the very basis of democracy. It is the core of freedom. Peoples, nations and nationalities brought together in a voluntary unity are likely to stay together for long.
But those states forced to live together by brutal force are likely to disintegrate. See the example of the Soviet Union where an artificial unity broke up fast when democracy and freedom began to take hold.
It is not for nothing that many international conventions recognize fully and support the inalienable right of Self-determination.
This is one of the most important mechanisms of defusing regional, racial, religious and ethnic tensions.
It is a system that accommodates the wishes and aspirations of all in a diversified society. In short it is the only way to ensure peace and stability in both complex and homogeneous societies.
In the case of Southern Sudan, Self-determination has been distorted behind recognition. Some have defined it as secession. Others have said it would lead to unity. Some talk of federation and confederation. This is very unfair to Southern Sudanese.
The referendum to decide how the Southerners vote has not yet been conducted. Why put the cart before the horse?
Southern Sudanese have feelings, anxieties, worries, concerns, beliefs just like other human beings.
They have customs which they want respected. They have values which they want promoted. They want an improved standard of life. They want a fair share of power, wealth and economic development.
It is these issues that people should be talking about, and doing something about.
Unity is not a gift, it is a reward. Those who want it must work for it. Nobody should expect Southern Sudanese to vote for unity when their rights continue to be stumbled upon.
The Southern Sudanese people have numerous grievances, almost all of which are known to our compatriots in the North.
Those who want unity should begin to address those grievances. Al-Sadig Al-Mahdi, the leader of the Umma Party talks about the dangers of secession. But he had two opportunities as Prime Minister to address the ills and imbalance in the Sudanese society to avoid secession. What did he do? He made the situation worse and hastened the demand for secession in Southern Sudan.
Now he still has a chance to bring about equality and achieve unity in Sudan. Is he doing anything in that direction? Nothing, instead he is moaning about the problems of secession. No amount of moaning, no amount of crying wolf, no amount of force would deter the people of Southern Sudan from their inalienable right to Self-determination!
Those in Northern Sudan who are serious about National reconciliation have a chance to turn that Self-determination into unity. But they better hurry.
