The action and intention of the Sudan Government (GOS) are in question. Overlooking the Nubian civilization, attributing findings of Nubian origin to others, subjecting Nubians to hardship and insecurity for almost a century (1903 to date) by inundating their villages and towns, and forcing them to relocate far away from their homeland, as well as inundating Nubian historical and archaeological sites, do not look like a mere coincidence. This systematic procedure to abolish Nubia and the Nubian civilization should be dealt with seriously. The ancient Nubian civilization which has been accredited as the Greatest African civilization and which has contributed to the formation of humanity and world civilization is not merely a Nubian internal issue. The Nubians with their inherited persistence, tolerance and genuineness have managed to overcome all these hardships and preserved their identity as one of the most distinguished and active communities in Africa, however, they are now in desperate need to assistance of the international community to step in and help save their endangered culture and heritage.
The Nubian exodus of 1960, because of Aswan High Dam, has ushered an era of long sufferings for Nubians. The consequences were tragic as they lost a precious part of a homeland rich with internationally renouned monuments and historical artifacts. The limited campaign of UNESCO on behalf of the world community then, to salvage a small part of those monuments was highly regarded by all Nubians.
Another part of Nubia with a wealth of monuments attributed to Nubian and human civilization is bound to disappear for ever due to the decisions taken by GOS to build series of dams on the Nile valley. If allowed to be implemented, such decisions are bound to wipe out all traces of this magnificent human achievement. Moreover, the Nubian people would lose their land, their language and their culture. Merowe dam is now almost complete with the help of the Chinese Government and Arab Funds; next comes Kajbar on the third cataract, then Dal, on the second cataract and then Shrake Dam on the fifth cataract.
The Nubian people, organizations and associations are campaigning to stop another tragedy. They do not want to lose their heritage and ancestors' lands. We have organized demonstrations to protest against the building of the Kajbar Dam, imposed, without consent. We have expressed opposition to the dam peacefully, but the GOS and its security forces at the Kajbar Dam site have used tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the demonstrations and 4 people were killed and several others have been injured. This time, the Nubians will not accept any fake promises because they know t he construction of dams has been one of the main factors responsible for the destruction, loss and damage of cultural heritages all over the world.
We call upon all Sudanese political parties, marginalized forces, and the Sudanese people to:
* Express their strong support to the rights of Nubians in living in their ancestral lands and preserving their heritage, culture and historical wealth within the framework of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) which stipulates clearly the equal rights of all Sudanese people in power and wealth sharing.
* Stop the building of Kajbar dam and any other dam in the historically rich lands of Nubia and work to encourage and attract international tourism to Nubia as an alternative method for development instead of flooding and devastating Nubian lands for ever.
We call upon the international community to:
* Take every necessary step to act expediently to stop forthwith the building of the Kajbar Dam and any other dam in the heartland of Nubia and extend every possible help to the Nubians in their noble struggle to prevent building of such dams.
* Protect and enable the indigenous people of Nubia to have the right and freedom to use their ancestral lands, territories and resources which they have historically owned; and to maintain their right to control, protect and develop their language, cultural heritage and traditions
* Ensure the right of the indigenous people of Nubia to revitalize, use, develop and transmit to future generations their history, languages, oral traditions, philosophies, writing systems and literatures without any threat of inundation and displacement;
* Ensure the rights of the Nubian people to achieve real development without endangering their existence on their homeland and to share the wealth and the power of the whole country, including their own rich resources;
* Play a key role in safeguarding the monuments, sites, cultural landscapes, and the indigenous Nubian people, threatened by the construction of the dams; and
* Implement any possible measurers to save the region and prevent any confrontations or clashes that will repeat what has and is happening in Darfur.
