Sudanese citizens enjoy no political rights and their civil liberties are compromised, ranking Sudan almost at the bottom of the Index for both variables. Even though Sudan is characterised by a multu-party government and the political system enables competition among multiple rival parties in the legislative branch, power remains in the hands of the political actors, who do not face any constraints on any arbitrary actions they might take. Electoral processes for the executive branch are poorly regulated and subject to political interference. Added to this is the fact that the judiciary is highly subservient to other branches of government. The political system experiences high instability, with the last regime change less than five years ago.
