    4. Activities:

    4.1 Teaching:



    4.1.1. As from 1983 presenting lectures on the aetiology, symptoms with stress on Epodemiology and Control of Parasitic Infections, including Protozoal, Helminth and Arthropod Caused diseases to B.V.Ss. Part (IV) and (V) students. Collaborated with Juba and BahrelGazal and Nyala Universities in similar courses. Also taught lectures in biology of invertebrates to medical students, College of Technology and Sciences – Sudan.



    4.1.2. Responsible for practical classes in diagnosis of parasitic infections, particular emphasis is given to demonstration of causative agents of the diseases and practical methods for their control.



    4.1.3. Supervised graduation dissertations of 5 honours students of biology, Faculty of Education, University of Khartoum and 2 in Faculty of Natural Resources, Juba University.



    4.1.4. Presented lectures on Zoonosis and Trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) at the Institute of Tropical Medicine to Diploma students (Medical) and MD postgraduate students.



    4.1.5. Gave lectures on control of parasitic diseases to participants in Master of Tropical Animal Health Course since 1996 – now.



    4.1.6. Supervisor of several postgraduate degree students. Those included 10 Ph.D. students and 35 M. Sc. students at the University of Khartoum, International Africa University and Omdurman Islamic University.

    4.2. Research:



    Most of the research had been conducted at the Department of Preventive Medicine and Veterinary Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Shambat. However, collaboration and joint research had been closely linked with other departments and other institutes locally and abroad. Successful links had been established with: The Sudan National Centre for Research – Khartoum, the Department of Medicine, Therapeutics and Toxicology and the Department of Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, University of Khartoum, and Endemic Diseases Institute, Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum. Also collaboration is active and productive with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK, CTVM, UK, ICIPE and ILRI, Kenya, the DBL, Denmark and STI, Switzerland.

    Main areas of interest are:



    4.2.1. Animal Trypanosomioses:



    a. Pathogenicity of Sudan strains to various livestock species and their epidemiology.



    b. Improvement and introduction of modern technology for detection of the disease e.g. IFAT and ELISA and other advanced techniques.



    c. Studies in Trypanotolerance.



    d. Studies in the phenomenon of drug resistance of the caustive trypanosomes to trypanocidal agents.



    4.2.2. Schistosomiasis:



    In collaboration with the Bovine Schistosomiasis Project, Department of Pathology for the study of some immunological aspects of S. bovis in Sudanese cattle aiming at the development of a vaccine.



    4.2.3. Thieleriosis:



    In collaboration with Juba University and NORAD for the isolation and characterization of Sudan strains of Thieleria spp. to be utilized in vaccine production.



    4.2.4. Internal helminthiasis:



    Studies on epidemiology of helminth in man and animal, their zoonotic nature and control possibilities.



    4.2.5. Disease vectors:



    Biting flies and snails ecology aiming at development of sound control strategies.

    4.3. Administration:



    While being present at the Department, I had the following administrative assignments:

    5. Studies on Assessment of Drug Resistance in Trypanosoma brucei evansi and Trypanosoma congloense. (M.V.Sc., 1990).



    6. Epidemiology of Trypanosomiasis in the Central State – Sudan (M.V.Sc., 1992).

    1. Continues research for revealing factors causing drug resistance in Trypanosomiasis infection.



    2. Continues research on determination of Trypanotolerant characters Sudanese sheep, goats and cattle.



    3. New area for characterization of strains of Thielera spp. in the Sudan and the vaccine production.



    4. Community participatory techniques in disease ranking and disease burden in animals.



    5. Mapping of diseases especially vector borne.
