Friends of Deng Want Answers from Police

IOWA CITY - Friends of the Iowa City man who a sheriff's deputy shot and killed say they want answers from police.
They're outraged that 26-year-old John Deng was shot to death after police say he stabbed an Iowa City man on East Prentiss Street last Friday night.
Police reports say Deng didn't listen to the plain-clothed deputy's warning to drop his knife. When Deng made another move, the deputy shot him.
Those who knew Deng say he wasn't a violent person and they never saw him carrying a weapon. They think he was scared that night, and might have been trying to protect himself.
Ale#### Hendje first met John Deng about a year ago on Iowa City's ped mall.
"He said "do you want to share a sandwich with me?" I looked at him and said, 'no, not really.' He said 'c'mon. Come sit down here and talk with me,'" said Hendje.
So, Hendje did and soon they became good friends. "The day he was killed I did see him and spoke with him on the corner."
Hendje would never see her friend Deng again. "I'm devastated. I'm quite devastated."
Hendje joined about 50 others last night at City Hall to ask police why the deputy had to shoot Deng.
"Did the officer identify himself so that Deng didn't feel threatened by two men?" said Vershawn Young with Citizens for Social Justice. "If he did it was probably out of trying to protect himself. Probably not knowing who that man was trying to harm him or not."
Iowa City Police Sgt. Troy Kelsay said, "I've heard "well, they should've shot to wound or he should've shot a leg or an arm or he should've shot the knife out of his hands. You know, that's Hollywood, that's TV."
Sergeant Kelsay says based on 9-1-1 calls, and police reports, the deputy only had seconds to decide how to disarm what he believed to be a dangerous man.
"Based on Deputy Stotler's account I believe that he perceived deadly force to be threatened. It was being employed and he countered with deadly force," said Sgt. Kelsay.
"He wasn't a violent person. He was very nice, considerate, and kind to everybody," said Hendje.
Deng's friends hope police will hold a public forum to allow the community to learn more about what happened.
Police say they'd like to continue the conversation with concerned parties, but a public forum isn't likely before they finish their investigation.
Police say they've finally located two of Deng's family members in Nebraska and have told them what happened.
"They were I think understandably distraught. Not only had they kinda lost touch with him and weren't aware of his situation but to be contacted by police or law enforcement investigators and told he was dead. They needed some time to deal with it," said Sgt. Kelsay.
Police say the family members are working on funeral arrangements, although no details are available at this time.
