ابنتنا الحبيبة عزه عصام صالح عيسى ، شاركت بالرأي في المداخلة التي وردتني بالبريد الخاص ، ورأي (عزه) ربما يمثل رأي بعض أبنائنا الذين يدرسون بالخارج ، وهذا الرأي حتما اضافة تثري الحوار الذي انحصر حتى الآن بين فئة عمريه متقاربة باستثناء القليل ، سأترك للجميع التعليق والرأي . أود أن أوضح أن (عزه) وشقيقها الأصفر (عمر) تبادلا الرأي في الموضوع عبر النت لأن كل منهما يدرس في جامعة في مدينه مختلفة وسأنشر رسالة حبيبنا (عمر) لاحقا.
Dear amo Murtada (and baba),
I read your well-put loving article on Sudan line, responding to the writer who abhorred the “nifag” and current overall status in Sudan. I have another take on his comments though. I think he was brave to say that he was glad to raise his kids outside Sudan “al molawath”.
I was totally able to relate to his bold statements, which you found extreme and misrepresentative. He may have seemed to be generalizing the whole culture, which may be harsh and unfair to the poor families who work hard in their villages to put food on the table. But on a larger macroscopic scale, this does not change the fact that as a whole, the Sudanese culture is not as pure or as great as it may have once been. On the contrary, it is like a rock rolling down from hilltop, catching dirt and accumulating whatever it can as it rolls down. People are undermining the rock that keeps on growing and rolling, and are saying look there are roses and flowers on both sides of the hill. We will hold on until the rock falls and we’ll pick up from there and replace the roses and flowers in the trail that was ruined. BUT, there must be a reason why the rock fell in the first place. There are other rocks that can fall and roll down again if we are not willing to go up the hill and see the origin of the problem and fix it.
We had a nadwa here a couple of days ago and the speaker is a Sudanese Doctor who talked about AIDS in Sudan. According to mama and Omer he said shocking realities about Sudan. I heard about the numbers from a speaker from doctors without borders listing sudan as an AIDS zone, but coming from a Sudanese doctor was more confirming. There is no reason to deny it. When I mentioned this before, Sudanese friends were like, “you think they don’t have it here…they have no religion or values. It is probable worse here. They just don’t say it”. Wrong. When they have it, they do say it. They warn people about it, they take precautions, and they have actors and health professionals talking about it on tv.
The actual reasons why it is rising in Sudan have nothing to do with religion, culture, or tradition. The reasons have to do with values, and simply are honesty and opportunity…. honesty about the condition, and willingness to accept an opportunity of a possible treatment. Which is exactly what we lack in Sudan: the honesty to admit our current condition or lack thereof and the unwillingness to change.
The risks are there if we try any course of action, but admitting our shortcomings is a brave step, not a coward one. I could not find his article. I only read your article, which was against some of his remarks. I found your article very direct and sincere, but I could not stop wondering do you truly believe so?? Do you really wish you made your own kids grow up in Sudan in its current condition???
I totally understand your view about not generalizing the declining trend to the mass of people, but I think the trend has already become associated with the general public, and its effect is seen in every aspect in Sudan. This is what I thought the writer was trying to reflect. He was fed up with the Sudanese pride that has nothing to show for it in Sudan. Even more, he was predicting a disastrous future in Sudan based on the present that is “molawath”. What could be worse than our situation right now? You name it, we have it. Diseases, deaths, wars, poor life conditions, prejudice, nifag, racism, corruption, opportunism, alcohol, drugs,…etc.
I was shocked by the stories I heard in universities while I was Sudan. I was shocked by the life conditions in rural areas 30 minutes away from Khartoum. We have reached an era of total instability. An era of volcanoes erupting inside the youth, the unfortunate, the ill, the poor, the ones who struggle to make it and don’t gaining recognition simply because they are not “awlad gabayel”. The volcanoes are eruptting lava making Sudan more poluted, more “molawath”.

He was not being an extremist. He was merely stating the facts boldly. The great Sudanese rituals, the beautiful memories that the generations of the 60’s and the 70’s have been fortunate enough to witness and relate to in Sudan have no moral grounds, not a single echo among us who are in our twenties now. Letting aside the emotions and loyalties, all what we see is opportunism. The west teaches us the opportunistic capitalist idea of letting your work speak for you, and to be proud of it. Our culture tells us to work hard, and be humble, because people are watching. We don’t have the concept of doing something to the fullest. They say here in university, work hard, play hard, do everything with your full heart and mind. This concept does not exist in Sudan, because if you do anything to the extreme you are abnormal and it is bad to be abnormal. Because this concept minimizes socialization, and “nifag”. It minimizes your chance of being like everyone else.
We need to stop pretending that everything is fine. We need to stop teaching our kids to pretend, and call it social morals and values. We need to stop pushing youth to fight and struggle in one direction because our society does not appreciate artists, musicians, writers, actors, feminists, extremists or revolutionists. Our society has no hope of advancement if all we want is to be carbon copies from each other. We need to stop the vision that Sudanese people are nice people, because we are not. We are like everyone else, more to the other end of the spectrum, we are selfish and “7asdeen” and don’t help each other improve.
We have zero tolerance for differences and we point accusing fingers towards governments, and never towards our Sudanese values that make us aggressive “somon, bokmon, 3omy” about our reality. It is not our heritage or culture. It is the fact that unbalanced expectations of a generation of the past led to the next unbalanced generation, and the ball kept on growing down the generation hill. No one was willing to take the risk and ask for a radical change that would eliminate the problem from its roots, because we are a culture that hates differences to the extent that we are willing to become “indifferent” to maintain our so called distinctiveness.
I don’t understand why Sudanese people think they are the most religious, the most social, the most generous. In my eyes this is all “nifag” in itself. Nifag because they hide the ugly side of the truth, they hide their real needs, and show only the pretty side to gain acceptance and appraisal. So what? Some may be heroes, but they remain to be liars and monafgeen. I don’t find it worth appraisal at all when a whole culture aims to be heroic and “monafig”. So who is supposed to express the troubles and needs? “Nifag” is TOTALLY the situation in Sudan, and sorry ya Amo Murtada if I seem an extremist or pessimistic, but is because I love Sudan. I love the land that was once able to hold many different races and people together peacefully. I love the land that gave birth to many great people I love dearly. I love it to the extent that I refuse to lie for it and to say that I would love to raise my kids there, because at this point it is not great and it is too dangerous to raise kids in. It is a reality that we can accept with equanimity or work hard to alter.
The values people Sudanese people tend to be proud of are not realistic because at the end of the day we are just humans. Long-term life-lasting values need to be simpler and more inclusive. They exist in every society, East or West, because they are based on humanity and common sense, not on religion or prestige. The values need to be readdressed in Sudan because there is so much confusion and separation. We decided that Sudan’s official language is Arabic only, it is a Muslim country, and then decided which regions are more important than others. It may be a purely geopolitical game, but I can’t ignore the strong parallel between this division and the cultural division among those who are supposed to be still Muslims and speak Arabic. They are still divided and assessed as shawayga, omarab, ja3alyeen, swarab, or whatever. How is it that we claim that we are a compassionate culture when there are shamasa across the street who are treated like dirt and considered robbers and losers? Why do we claim honesty while we struggle in Sudan, yet still have the most “show-off” weddings and funerals. So, they bring Asala to sing in a Sudanese wedding !!!
I think the writer was right when he said his kids get confused when they go to Sudan. Of course they well. He may have lived there and understood it, but that does not mean his kids will. All of the sudden, they get new cloths and are told to go to Sudan for a vacation. No, the vacation is actually meant for them to go and learn morals in Sudan. I thought morals are universal ??!! There is the first piece of “nifag” we teach them…morals are in Sudan. You need to go and learn how to pray and talk Arabic in Sudan. The largest Islamic country is Indonesia, and they don’t speak Arabic! Anyway, so the kids go to Sudan expecting something different, something unknown and what they learn is confusion. Running around with other kids, bad words, no set bed times or specific eating times. Contradictions bombarded at them from every corner, and even more contradictions if they are girls in their teens.
I believe that our Sudanese fixed nature of “idealizing traditional values” is the cause of our own downfall. Our inflexibility and stubbornness about our Sudanese identity is the root of the problem. Exactly like the roots of an oak tree that primarily served to introduce the tree to its new niche and stabilized it to the ground. But then it grew miles and miles underground preventing new trees from growing. So after years, the great oak tree stood all-alone. It grew older and its mere presence caused hindrance to the rest of the grass wanting to grow, causing them to struggle “ila ajal geyr mosama”.
The oak tree may need to get stripped off the ground with great amount of effort to build new societies. We can replace it somewhere else to learn patience and strength from it, but we don’t need to stop all our advancement plans just because the tree is there.
